Wright State University invites nominations for and applications from individuals interested in assuming an exciting leadership opportunity as Vice Provost for Research and Innovation. Wright State University seeks an individual of significant scholarly accomplishment, with the experience, leadership, breadth of vision, and zeal to serve as the Vice Provost for Research and Innovation of a metropolitan, research university. This position reports to the Provost and is expected to provide dynamic and innovative leadership in the quest for excellence in scholarship, research and innovation with the mission of achieving a Carnegie ranking of high research activity. The Vice Provost will coordinate the activities and aspirations of the diverse constituencies involved in the university’s research enterprise, including the regional Lake Campus and the Wright State Research Institute.

Wright State University, located 12 miles northeast of downtown Dayton, Ohio, offers more than 295 undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and professional degree programs through eight colleges and three schools. The university also operates a regional campus, Wright State University–Lake Campus, on the shores of Grand Lake St. Mary’s in Celina, Ohio. Enrollments on the two campuses surpassed 12,000 undergraduate and 3,500 graduate, doctoral and professional students in Fall 2018. Wright State University was named to honor aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright, who invented the world's first successful airplane in their Dayton bicycle shop. In fact, the Wright brothers conducted most of their early test flights at Huffman Prairie, just minutes from the Dayton campus. Wright State University takes pride in its beautiful 557-acre campus, which includes lush forests and a biology preserve. The university’s state-of-the-art facilities include 71 academic and support buildings, 33 student residential buildings, and a world-class entertainment and athletics venue. Underground tunnels connect 20 of 22 buildings in the academic section of the Dayton campus, shielding students and employees from any adverse weather and adding to the university’s national reputation for accessibility for those with disabilities.

The Vice Provost oversees the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, the Office of Technology Transfer, the Office of Research Compliance, and the Wright State Research Institute; serves as the principal research officer of the university and liaison to the Ohio Department of Higher Education Research Officers' Council; serves on the President’s Leadership Team, on faculty governance committees for research as an ex officio member, and works with the Deans and other Vice Provosts to formulate and Implement university policies; serves as Institutional Official for all research compliance committees and as the Research Integrity Officer (RIO); builds vigorous partnerships with industry and government; provides leadership in formulating goals and policies for growth of research productivity.

Minimum Requirements:

The Vice Provost is expected to have an earned doctorate and record of professional accomplishment commensurate with appointment to the rank of professor; experience with research administration and promotion of technology transfer; experience with major federal funding agencies, and an understanding of the interface between academic inquiry and the private and government sectors; successful administrative and fiscal management experience at a university; strong interpersonal and communication skills, and personal characteristics that include openness, energy, intellect, dignity, integrity, optimism, vision, and the ability to listen, to persuade, and to show appreciation of the efforts of others; knowledge of the full spectrum of research compliance policies; ability to build consensus with interdisciplinary teams; ability to develop, propose, and execute large-scale research programs with multi-disciplinary faculty collaborators and with government and industry partners; record of fostering an environment conducive for growth of faculty scholarship, funded research, including activities in non-STEM fields; ability to obtain a government security clearance; experience in administration of research and academic integrity policies.

 

Preferred Qualities:

 

A strong candidate will have an extensive record of internationally recognized professional accomplishments in a research intensive discipline; experience with research administration, technology transfer, and commercialization at increasingly responsible levels and successful support of university entrepreneurs; demonstrated commitment to working with regional and state economic development agencies; credentials consistent with a tenured faculty member within an academic unit at Wright State University; demonstrated commitment to diversity in hiring and in facilitating research engagement from traditionally underrepresented groups; evidence of student engagement in research; active participation and leadership roles within one or more professional societies; diverse work experience including academia as well as industrial employment or government service.
