Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Dean of the Graduate Division

The University of California, Berkeley, invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Dean of the Graduate Division.

Reporting directly to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies will be charged with leading a broad and inclusive campus discussion about the changing needs of graduate students, and helping Berkeley develop a vision, strategy, and plan for strengthening a world-class graduate learning community. Our aim is to provide Berkeley doctoral students with the training, mentorship, and financial support needed to become pioneers in the discovery of new knowledge and leaders in a broad range of settings; and to empower Berkeley masters and professional students with the knowledge, skills, and networks to enable lifetimes of accomplishment, leadership, and service. In order to successfully achieve these goals, the Vice Provost will have a strong commitment to Berkeley's shared governance model and actively promote a campus culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Vice Provost for Graduate Studies must be ready to provide strong, collaborative leadership in all areas of graduate education. This position develops and oversees funding programs for graduate student support across all campus units, is accountable for over $100 million in student financial support, and engages in external fundraising efforts to increase funding for direct support of graduate students as well as support services. The Vice Provost will guide the Graduate Division in maintaining the exceptional quality of Berkeley's graduate education and in providing academic, personal, and professional support services that are vital to the well-being and success of Berkeley's approximately 11,500 masters, professional, and doctoral students.

Candidates must hold a terminal degree at the time of application and have a distinguished record of scholarship that warrants a tenured faculty appointment at Berkeley with the rank of Professor. Successful candidates will be strategic and transformational leaders who have a strong record of collaboration, commitment to shared governance, community building, and higher education administrative experience; in-depth knowledge of issues in graduate education; a resolutely student-centered approach; demonstrated effective work in support of diversity, equity, and inclusion; and expertise in fundraising and fiscal matters.
