Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor of Jazz Studies  

 

Duties: Oversee the activities of the newly-formed David and Thelma Steward Institute for Jazz Studies at the University of Missouri – St. Louis, and taking charge of a recently-created Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies. This includes recruiting students; working with administration on strategies to grow the Institute; cultivating and maintaining positive relationships with area public schools and the greater St. Louis community; leading the annual Greater St. Louis Jazz Festival, including working with the Touhill Performing Arts Center administration on artistic programming for the festival as well as organizing the educational outreach arm of the festival; running the UMSL Summer Jazz Camp; supervising the day-to-day operations of UMSL’s jazz curriculum; advising students for success in their degree programs and preparing them for productive careers. The successful candidate will have the administrative experience needed to accomplish the above, as well as experience directing a big band and combos, and teaching classes typically found in an undergraduate jazz studies curriculum, such as jazz theory, jazz keyboard harmony, jazz history, and/or jazz arranging.

Qualifications:    Terminal degree in music required, or equivalent professional experience.

Rank and Salary: 12-month contract, renewable assuming satisfactory job performance. Appointment begins August 1, 2019. Salary and rank commensurate with experience and qualifications.
