Inaugural Dean, School of Health Studies and Education

Saint Joseph’s University invites nominations and applications for the position of Inaugural Dean, School of Health Studies and Education.

Founded in 1851 in the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, Saint Joseph’s University is a highly rated private Division I university that provides a rigorous, comprehensive, student-centered Jesuit education with a total enrollment of 8,000 undergraduate and graduate students and more than 300 full-time faculty. The University, located in Philadelphia, the nation’s fifth largest city and a hub of the Northeast corridor, sits on a tranquil, beautiful campus with ready access to a dynamic urban center. Dr. Mark C. Reed, the university’s first lay president, is a strategic leader and strong fundraiser with a deep commitment to Catholic higher education. Upon graduation, nearly 100 percent of students are employed, pursuing advanced degrees or volunteering in prestigious service programs. SJU alumni – over 60,000 strong – provide a powerful network that spans the globe.

The newly formed School of Health Studies and Education will build upon more than 40 established undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and certificate programs in health and education—two rapidly changing and growing sectors with a strong presence in Philadelphia. Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and serving on the University’s Leadership Council, the Dean of the School of Health Studies and Education will oversee the launch of the school in the Fall of 2019 and will function as its chief academic and administrative officer. The Dean will provide leadership for dynamic and accomplished faculty scholars coming from four established departments and will partner with internal and external constituencies to develop new programmatic offerings. S/he will promote and invest in opportunities to support the intellectual curiosity and growth of students, including robust study abroad, service-learning, internship, and co-op programs. The Dean will leverage the abundant industry connections and educational resources Philadelphia offers to enhance partnerships locally and nationally and to fundraise for the priorities of the School and University. The ideal candidate will be an innovative and entrepreneurial leader with strong academic and administrative experience, demonstrate an ability to build relationships across organizations, have a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, and embrace the Jesuit concept of cura personalis—caring for the whole person.
