Assistant Professor (Human Geography)

The Department of Economics and Geosciences at the United States Air Force Academy anticipates filling up to two positions at the rank of Assistant Professor of Geosciences, beginning approximately June 24, 2019. Applicants will be assessed based on education, evidence of teaching effectiveness, scholarly activities, and service to the discipline and institution. Essential qualities expected of every faculty member include the personal attributes of integrity, industry, cooperation, initiative, and breadth of intellectual interests.

Responsibilities include: teaching undergraduate courses in Human Geography and World Regional/World Cultural Geography and other courses in the program as needed; academic advising; serving as a faculty mentor for undergraduate research; serving on departmental and Academy committees; and maintaining a record of research commensurate with academic rank. Candidates must have earned a Doctoral degree in Geography or a related field, or letter of completion by June 24, 2019.

We seek two enthusiastic Geographers who are committed to teaching excellence in the fields of Human and/or Cultural Geography. Preference for one position is given to applicants who can provide appropriate context in support of military geography, intelligence studies, and/or GEOINT. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to provide excellent instruction and mentorship at the undergraduate level, and interface with program strengths in human geography, physical geography, GIS, and remote sensing.

The United States Air Force Academy, located just north of Colorado Springs, Colorado, awards the Bachelor of Science degree as part of its mission to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation. The initial appointment is for three years. Successive reappointments of up to four years will be based upon an assessment of performance, Air Force and departmental needs, and funding availability. The Academy faculty is an integrated group of military and civilian educators, with a record of offering continuing appointments to civilian faculty after demonstrated excellence in the initial three-year appointment.
