Director, Ph.D. Program in Intelligent Systems & Robotics

The University of West Florida (www.uwf.edu) invites nominations and applications for the
appointment of Director, Ph.D. Program in Intelligent Systems & Robotics. The Director will lead a
new program which is a collaborative effort in conjunction with the Florida Institute for Human and
Machine Cognition (IHMC, http://www.ihmc.us).

THE HAL MARCUS COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
The mission of the Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering (HMCSE) at the University of
West Florida is to provide innovative programs of excellence in education, research, and public and
professional service at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. HMCSE promotes the production
of highly competitive graduates as judged by the highest academic standards in the fields of science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Within HMCSE, the Department of Intelligent
Systems & Robotics will be the home of the new Ph.D. program. It is anticipated that the new Ph.D.
program will engage faculty across HMCSE and UWF in developing a nationally prominent research
program.
The Institute for Human and Machine Cognition is a not-for-profit research institute of the State
University System of Florida. IHMC has grown into one of the nation’s premier research institutes
with multiple university and industry affiliations and more than 100 researchers and staff investigating
a broad range of topics related to understanding cognition in both humans and machines. Particular
emphasis is placed on multidisciplinary approaches to building computational tools to leverage and
amplify human cognitive, physical and perceptual capabilities. Current active research areas include:
agile computing, knowledge modeling and sharing, adjustable autonomy, advanced interfaces and
displays, communication and collaboration, computer-mediated learning systems, intelligent data
understanding, software agents, expertise studies, computer and network security, work practice
simulation, knowledge representation, biologically-inspired robotics, trust in autonomy and other
related areas.


RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE DIRECTOR
The Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering (HMCSE) at the University of West Florida
(UWF), Pensacola, Florida, invites applications for a full-time Director of the new Ph.D. program in
Intelligent Systems and Robotics which is anticipated to launch in fall 2019 (position number 125370).
The new program is a collaborative effort with the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition
(IHMC, http://www.ihmc.us) in Pensacola, Florida. The successful candidate will have a joint
appointment with IHMC. In addition to teaching and research responsibilities commensurate with
faculty in Ph.D. programs, the Director will be responsible for the shaping and ongoing administration
of the new program, hiring of new faculty, and the recruitment of doctoral students.

QUALIFICATIONS
The applicant must have a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline from an
accredited institution with a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching, academic research, and
service. Applicants who work in all areas associated within Intelligent Systems and Robotics at the
rank of Associate or Full Professor are encouraged to apply. However, strong preference will be given
to applicants within the field of Intelligent Systems who present evidence of successful program
creation or administration combined with national/international recognition for scholarship and
creative achievements.
