The Department of Computer Science at Bowling Green State University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month Qualified-Rank (i.e., non-tenure-track) faculty position in the area of Software Engineering that will be filled at either an Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor, depending upon experience. Start date is August 2025.
Information about Program and College
The Department of Computer Science is located within the College of Arts and Sciences. The vision for our College, aligned with the university’s strategic plan, is to ensure that our students graduate career-ready to meet the world’s challenges, and that our faculty research and creative activity contribute to the public good. We achieve this through robust collaboration across departmental boundaries, with particular attention given to increasing experiential learning for our undergraduate and graduate students and connecting our scholarly and creative work to the needs of our region. We are especially interested in recruiting candidates who can contribute excellence in teaching, scholarly/creative work, and/or service toward achieving inclusive excellence throughout the university and to the greater community. The College is committed to faculty success, providing resources and support within the Dean’s Office and through collaboration with Arts and Sciences departments and schools, leadership teams in other colleges, and university-serving partners such as the Center for Faculty Excellence. Through these connections, we have developed a comprehensive, cohort-based mentorship program to support the professional growth and advancement of faculty across all disciplines and ranks. The Department currently has 14 full-time faculty members with national and/or international reputations, about 330 undergraduate majors, and 80 graduate students. Undergraduate students pursue baccalaureate degrees in computer science and software engineering and graduate students pursue a MS in Computer Science and in Data Science, and a Ph.D. in Data Science. The B.S. in Computer Science is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. The B.S. in Software Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. Additionally, the Department is actively developing new programs, such as an online M.S. in Software Engineering, to meet evolving educational and industry demands.
The Department of Computer Science is one of the units that has been served by BGSU ALLIES, a three-year project funded by NSF that is designed to increase the participation and advancement of women in academic STEM careers. Paralleling similar efforts at the student level, the department sponsors the BG Women in Computing student organization, which became a student chapter of ACM-W in 2018. The department has also recently been awarded a $1.14 million scholarship fund from the State of Ohio and the Department of Higher Education to recruit high-achieving students from underrepresented groups.

Essential Functions
- Teach a variety of courses (3 or 4 courses per semester, including on-line courses), mostly in the areas of Software Engineering, such as Programming, Data Structures, Algorithms, Database, Software Development, Requirement Analysis and Design, Software Quality Assurance, DevOps, or Agile Project Management effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels using inclusive pedagogies and course design with a student learning focus
- Advise undergraduate and graduate students
- Provide service at the department, college, university, professional, and community level
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. or equivalent in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related discipline (e.g., Computer Engineering, Computer Information Systems) ABDs will be considered if the requirements for the degree will be completed by August 2025
- Teaching experience at the college level as a course instructor, teaching assistant, guest lecturer, or practicum instructor, OR professional experience developing, leading, and delivering technical training sessions or workshops.
- Applicants for the position at the Associate Teaching Professor (Lecturer) level need to meet the criteria for the rank at BGSU (Note: Associate Teaching Professors (Lecturers) typically have at least five years of teaching experience (See the approved policy at https://www.bgsu.edu/content/dam/BGSU/provost/faculty-affairs/documents/rtp-policies/approved-CBA-2-rtp-cs.pdf)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching online courses in software engineering or related areas (e.g., programming, data structures, algorithms) using effective pedagogical strategies and technologies
- Experience in curriculum development in software engineering or related fields (e.g., systems engineering, software development)
- Industry experience in software engineering, including roles such as software developer, architect, project manager, or technical lead, with a focus on innovation and practical application of advanced methodologies
- Institutional, professional, or community-level service experience
