The University of Michigan invites nominations and applications for the position of dean of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). The core liberal arts college in one of the nation’s premier public research universities, the college offers a vast array of opportunities for learning and research both within the traditional disciplines and in interdisciplinary programs, along with a range of resources that perennially attract the strongest students and faculty. The college combines the richness and diversity of its academic programs with personalized student advising and research opportunities that are unique in a school of its scope and size.

The dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. The dean will provide leadership in defining and articulating the college’s strategic priorities; recruiting and maintaining an excellent faculty; creating and supporting educational programs of the highest quality; attracting excellent students; creating collaborative opportunities with other schools and departments within the university; enhancing productive relationships with alumni, donors, and local, national, and international communities; and promoting academic collaboration, shared teaching, and scholarly exchange across national boundaries. The dean of LSA plays a major leadership role in the broader university, stimulating and facilitating synergistic collaboration with other schools and colleges as well as interdisciplinary institutes, centers, and programs.  As the chief academic, administrative, and financial officer of LSA, the dean reports directly to the provost and executive vice president for academic affairs.

The successful candidate will be tenurable at the full professor level in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. The dean will provide intellectual leadership to the college community, and should be a nationally recognized scholar with the desire, ability, and vision to sustain a leadership role within a university that is in the forefront of research and scholarship; graduate education; undergraduate education; and institutional, professional, and public service. They will need to employ a high level of administrative and financial acumen in leading this premier liberal arts college. The person must share the college’s deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and should have a clear vision for contributing to and increasing the college’s diversity in all its forms.
