The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) seeks a dynamic, visionary and entrepreneurial leader to serve as dean of the School of Nursing.
As chief academic officer and administrative leader of the School of Nursing, the dean will have exceptional opportunities to shape how the School contributes to UTEP’s acclaimed mission of access and excellence, promoting a culture of student success consistent with the UTEP Edge, a university-wide initiative that develops students' assets through a variety of high-impact practices. In setting the academic climate for the School, the dean will bring high academic standards, an outstanding record of research, strong management and leadership skills and a commitment to engaged scholarship. Working collaboratively with the assistant deans, faculty and staff, the dean will represent the School within the University and among a wide range of external constituencies.
Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the dean of the School of Nursing will serve as an essential member of the University’s leadership team. The dean will play a lead role in recruiting diverse and talented faculty, and oversee the development and mentoring of faculty to prepare the next generation of nurse leaders, clinicians, researchers and educators. The dean is expected to create and maintain strong relationships with community partners and contribute to and lead fundraising and development efforts.
UTEP, an emerging national research university, has served as a regional catalyst for economic development, social mobility and enhanced quality of life. The School of Nursing has established research programs and partnerships that are key to the University’s success in this mission. With the newly developed Biobehavioral Research Laboratory, the well-established Border Biomedical Research Center and with the soon to be completed 162,000 sq. ft. Interdisciplinary Research Building, opportunities will abound to address healthcare issues and enhance the School’s research portfolio.
Key Priorities for the Dean of the School of Nursing
- Support the mission of the School, addressing the healthcare needs of this community and region
- Continue to partner with assistant deans, faculty, chairs and directors in an education process involving adherence to accreditation standards, enhanced community engagement and scholarship, and excellence in clinical practice research
- Sustain and enhance interdisciplinary relationships with the School and across campus
- Foster clinical investigation into border and global health issues
- Enhance the School’s strategic research direction that is aligned with the University goals and objectives
- Promote high academic standards and provide growth opportunities for students
- Support the generation of high-quality research proposals for extramural grant funding
- Empower, support and advocate for faculty research and community engagement
- Recruit and retain competitive faculty, and supervise the promotion and tenure process
- Plan and administer the annual budget process for the School
- Cultivate and develop relationships with alumni, industry partners, and build external clinical and philanthropic partnerships
- Assume responsibility for the supervision of the School’s support staff and personnel
Qualifications and Experience
The Dean will be a nurse with an earned doctoral degree and the qualifications commensurate with an appointment as a tenured professor in the School of Nursing, and be eligible to hold an endowed chair. The Dean will have an outstanding record of supporting and encouraging research, strong management and leadership skills, and a commitment to engaged scholarship.
The successful candidate should also possess many of the following skills and qualities:
Demonstrated excellence in leadership, management, and communication, indicative of innovative approaches and the ability to make clear, informed decisions. A record that demonstrates a meaningful commitment to and accomplishment in issues associated with advancing diversity and inclusion. An open and consultative leadership style, collaborating with and motivating faculty, staff, and students, to take the School to a heightened level of success. Accomplishments that demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence, research, and service. A record of demonstrated success as an academic administrator in a similar organization. A clear understanding of leading-edge methods and instructional technologies to support teaching and learning. Demonstrated interest and commitment to faculty development and succession planning. The ability to serve faculty, staff and students in a manner that inspires reciprocal respect. Demonstrated experience with accreditation and the survey process.
Dedication to the University’s mission of access and excellence, commitment to student retention, and providing students with the highest-quality educational experience. Teaching experience in nursing.
Collaboration and Fundraising
A record of quantifiable success in external and alumni relations and asset development for a large, complex organization. Enthusiastic engagement with community and global partners and pursuit of opportunities for clinical and research collaborations.
Superior oral and written communication skills, high emotional intelligence, political adroitness, and the capacity to represent the School effectively to local, national and international constituencies.
Successful record of budget and fiscal management.
A doctoral degree in nursing, in addition to interdisciplinary experience.
