Dean, School of Music

The School of Music at the University of Louisville invites applications and nominations for a collaborative, visionary, strategic, and accomplished leader to serve as the next Dean. The Dean shall be a transformative leader capable of guiding the School of Music well into the 21st Century. The Dean shall be the musical, educational, and administrative head of the School and shall report to the University Provost. The School of Music is committed to providing innovative musical leadership and to expanding its role as an outstanding cultural and educational resource for the university and community. Our programs reflect diversity, innovation, creativity, and a commitment to excellence throughout our artistic, educational, research, and professional activities.

The Dean is responsible for the academic affairs of the School of Music. These affairs include but are not limited to: maintaining and furthering high standards among faculty and students, and ensuring that faculty fulfills its professional responsibilities to the University, colleagues, students, and community. The Dean shall also enhance an atmosphere in which meaningful musical instruction, research, creative activity, and service can flourish. The Dean represents the School of Music to internal and external constituencies, advocates for and champions the School of Music, communicates the School’s accomplishments and needs to constituents, expands community partnerships, and develops resources through program initiatives, internal university opportunities, and external fundraising. Finally, the Dean is responsible for maintaining, protecting, and improving the physical facilities of the School to ensure the integrity of the sites for musical instruction and performance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in Music with associated experience qualifying for academic appointment at rank of Professor of Music with tenure
  • Minimum of five years of experience in university department / school / college of music administration
  • Ability to advocate for the School of Music in the larger university community, while seeking out cooperative partnerships within the university to expand the range of academic and musical experiences for music students
  • Commitment to broadening the diversity of faculty, staff, and student constituencies
  • Budget management experience in various environments
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, donor stewardship, grant writing and capital campaign environments
  • Knowledge and experience in relevant music accreditation reporting and standards, and experience with academic program assessment and review
  • Evidence of strategic planning experience within the music unit and in the context of broader university initiatives and efforts to engage the community
  • Experience and commitment to a vibrant general education curriculum from the Music School that provides a range of musical opportunities for students throughout the university
  • Ability to think strategically, while possessing outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, and demonstrated ability to lead with professionalism and integrity

  • Proven record of mentoring junior faculty
  • Ability to lead difficult discussions to facilitate change
  • Strong service commitment
  • Experience in a broad range of musical settings/genres in teaching and leadership roles
  • Successful experience in music making, teaching, research/creative activities
