By joining the team that is designing and implementing the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. This position will be working as a part of an extremely dynamic team of professionals supporting all aspects of the school and the creation of the infrastructure, process, and procedures for the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine. The team works from an interdependent model of practice and we are looking for someone who thrives in a highly challenging role within a high functioning team-based environment.
The Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine is devoted first and foremost to offering an outstanding, forward-thinking medical education. Its curriculum is built on the three pillars of Biomedical Science, Clinical Science, and Health Systems Science. Students will think broadly about the ways care can be more effective for everyone and learn how to advocate for better health in homes, school, workplaces, neighborhoods, and society at large. The school will incorporate many of the most innovative and effective educational practices available today and will give students the opportunity to learn from the physicians and care teams in Kaiser Permanente’s integrated health care system. This approach will provide future physicians with the knowledge and skills to play key roles in the transformation of health care in our nation and help people from all backgrounds and settings thrive.
The Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine invites applications for a faculty position in the Department of Health Systems Science (HSS) (academic rank to be determined based on eligibility). We are seeking educators interested in delivering and refining innovative health systems science curriculum within a growing school of medicine that highly values inclusion and diversity, health system and community partnerships, and graduating physicians who are better prepared to face the health challenges of the future and help the nations diverse communities thrive. The Department of Health Systems Sciences mission includes: 1) delivery of an innovative longitudinal curriculum in four domains: community and population health, health care and social systems, quality and safety, and inquiry; and 2) pursuit of a broad scholarship agenda that will improve health, health care, and health equity through systems transformation and redesign. While this recruitment prioritizes hiring faculty members to support the Departments educational mission, new faculty will also be expected to engage in educational scholarship thereby contributing to the Departments scholarship mission.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Provide content expertise within one or more of the four HSS domains, which include community and population health, health care and social systems, quality and safety, and inquiry.
- Develop, implement, manage, and continuously improve the HSS curriculum across various settings, including classroom, clinical, and community, while engaging in educational scholarly activities related to these efforts.
- Present in large group sessions and facilitate in small to medium-group settings.
- Collaborate across the biomedical, clinical, and health systems science departments to integrate and reinforce concepts throughout the four-year curriculum.
- Identify opportunities to partner with health system and community leaders to enhance the HSS curriculum.
- Serve as a mentor to KPSOM students who choose HSS educational topics for their required scholarly projects.
- Additional teachings and scholarly duties, expectations, and resources will be individually developed based on evolving faculty interests and skills, as well as departmental priorities and needs.
Basic Qualifications:
- MD, PhD, other doctoral degree, or comparable degree.
- Experience with community and population health curriculum.
- Demonstrated educational experience in one or more of the following domains: community and population health, health care and social systems, patient safety, quality improvement, delivery system science, implementation science, inquiry, evidenced-based practice.
- Demonstrated experiences in leading curriculum design and development, student and course evaluation, and student assessment.
- Demonstrated experience with various teaching methodologies such as problem-based, team-based, case-based, technology-assisted, and flipped classrooms.
- Demonstrated outstanding teaching abilities and commitment to teaching.
- Demonstrated strong commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity.
- Demonstrated strong collaboration and communication skills.
- May not concurrently hold a postdoctoral appointment or participate in a training program.
