EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Mississippi State University (MSU) invites applications for the inaugural Dean of the School of Health Professions, located at the Riley Campus in Meridian, Mississippi. This new position represents a unique opportunity for a visionary leader to shape and elevate the School’s academic, research, and community engagement missions. The Dean will lead the School in meeting the health profession workforce needs of Mississippi and beyond, advancing a culture of academic excellence, collaboration, and innovation. Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President, the Dean will play a critical role in driving strategic initiatives, securing program accreditations, and expanding partnerships with healthcare providers and community stakeholders.
ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF HEALTH PROFESSIONS
The School of Health Professions is dedicated to training the next generation of healthcare leaders through innovative academic programs, research, and hands-on clinical experiences. Located on the Riley Campus in Meridian, the School will serve as a hub for health education and community engagement in Mississippi. The Dean will oversee programs in key areas of health professions, including program accreditation processes, curriculum development, and faculty recruitment. The programs in SHP join more than 15 programs at the University that lead to licensure or certification for work in health or mental health and other programs that, like healthcare administration, play a crucial role in advancing the health of society.
The School aims to address critical health workforce needs, equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in the healthcare field. Through collaborations with healthcare providers and community organizations, the School of Health Professions will contribute to improving healthcare access and quality for underserved populations.
Academic programs housed within the School of Health Professions include the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Applied Science in Healthcare Administration, the Bachelor of Social Work (transitioning from Arts and Sciences to the School of Health Professions in 2026), and the Master of Physician Assistant Studies. Offered online, the Healthcare Administration program allows increased access to the applied sciences fields in healthcare such as respiratory therapy, radiology, and others. The Master of Physician Assistant Studies program graduated its first class in 2023, and full accreditation is expected in 2025.
Students in these programs will engage in experiential learning through the Interprofessional Simulation Center, which has been granted provisional accreditation through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. The Center is a state-of-the-art facility designed to teach and assess knowledge, skills, and behaviors necessary for competency in healthcare. Resources include high-fidelity manikins and hired standardized patients housed within three floors of space with real-life hospital and clinical rooms. Through this simulation lab, MSU students are able to practice in a controlled and risk-free setting to enhance their clinical and technical skills through experiential learning with real-world patient cases.
In addition to the Riley Campus in Meridian, Mississippi State also owns and operates the MSU College Park Campus in Meridian. The College Park Campus is home to the Office of Faculty and Research Support, which provides support for grant proposal development and skill building for all faculty and staff, as well as the Office of Admissions and Marketing, which offers tailored support to prospects and applicants to healthcare programs at MSU.
OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPECTATIONS FOR LEADERSHIP
The Dean of the School of Health Professions will:

Provide visionary leadership to advance the School of Health Professions’ strategic plan, vision and goals

Establish and maintain a system for educational programs that meets the health profession workforce needs of East Central Mississippi, the state, and beyond

Assume responsibility for recruitment, appointment, retention and evaluation of faculty and staff

Lead faculty and staff to develop a culture of excellence and collaboration within the school and encourage collaboration with other colleges and schools across the institution

Lead the development and implementations of curricula in alignment with relevant accrediting bodies and emerging pedagogical trends

Work collaboratively with other university offices to recruit, admit, and matriculate students in health profession educational programs

Promote the School of Health Professions through relationship-building within the University, and among internal and external stakeholders, constituencies, prospective students, faculty and staff, professional organizations, community and clinical partners, and others

Organize and lead a Community Advisory Board and other external advisory groups to optimize programs in the School, Health Science Programs and across the University

Prepare budget projections, manage, and grow budget resources for fiscal accountability across health professions programs

Seek grants and philanthropic funding to advance quality academic programs and student opportunities

Provide oversight of program outcomes and evaluation data through continuous review and improvement for clinical needs and experiences, student, faculty and staff survey data, retention and graduation rates

Lead the preparation of annual reports and survey data for professional organizations, accrediting and regulatory bodies in accordance with program standards and criteria

Regularly participate in Academic Affairs leadership meetings, including, but not limited to, deans council, regularly scheduled deans meetings, and associated retreats

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND PERSONAL QUALITIES
It is required that the next Dean possesses an earned doctorate in a health professions-related field and qualifications for a senior rank and tenure at MSU. In addition, it is preferred, the successful candidate demonstrates:
- Previous relevant academic health professions leadership and teaching experience
- Demonstrated ability to think systemically, administer collegially and advocate effectively for the university, college, school and faculty, staff, and students
- Demonstrated commitment to access, opportunity, and student success
- Experience in administering a broad range of programs in settings including higher education
- Experience in budgetary and academic affairs

President, Dr. Mark E. Keenum
Dr. Mark Keenum has served as President of Mississippi State University since 2009, bringing a legacy of public service and dedication to student success. Under his leadership, MSU has reached record enrollment, expanded research expenditures, and developed a nationally recognized academic portfolio. Provost and Executive Vice President, Dr. David Shaw
Dr. David Shaw serves as the Provost and Executive Vice President of Mississippi State University, overseeing academic integrity and the strategic development of the university’s academic policies.
