Department Information

Indiana University, one of the largest employers in the state, is actively seeking a Vice President for Human Resources to oversee the HR function across all 9 campus locations. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and serving on the President's cabinet, the VP for Human Resources is responsible for programs and services that attract, develop, and retain IU employees in ways that align with the university's overall mission, strategic objectives, and desired culture.

Job Summary

  • Acts as a senior advisor and HR expert to the COO, President, the Board of Trustees, and the executive leadership team regarding the development of recruitment and retention strategic plans, implementation of human resource best practices, and the creation of programs/policies that solidify Indiana University as a top employer within the state.
  • Understands the university, its operations, business challenges, priorities, and opportunities to align strategic human resource initiatives with the university's mission and needs.
  • Establishes strong relationships with closely affiliated organizations including the Vice President for Finance and Administration, Vice President and General Counsel, and the Campus Academic Affairs offices to assure policies, processes, and systems are compliant with applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Leads and evaluates a team of HR professionals with the goal of earning and maintaining institutional trust and credibility that best serves the needs of varied constituents across a multi-campus research institution.
  • Builds and enhances critical programs to empower HR professionals across the university, enabling them to provide strategic planning insights to their respective organizations.
  • Manages the following:
    • A wide variety of benefit plans for appointed faculty, staff, medical residents, student academic employees, retirees, and students, including retirement and savings plans, healthcare plans, group insurance, tuition assistance, and retiree status benefits. 
    • Employee Assistance Program and Healthy IU wellness programs and resources.
    • Human resource policies for staff and part-time employees.
    • Paid Time-off Plans for staff employees.
    • Union negotiations and relations for staff employees (includes CWA and AFSME unions at various campus locations).
    • Employee relations consulting services. 
    • Organizational development, leadership development, and employee engagement programs.
    • Total compensation package design to support the university's needs for recruiting and retention.
    • Leave management including FMLA and Paid Parental Leave for staff employees.
    • ADA and PWFA administration.
    • Workers' Compensation administration.
    • Customer service and HR Information Management Systems and records management.
    • Talent acquisition strategies, including strategy and execution.
    • Technology-driven approaches for managing human resources functions, while still keeping the human element at the forefront. 

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree 

Preferred

  • Advanced degree in Human Resources and/or Human Capital Strategy, and/or other relevant professional accomplishment in the fields of Human Resources and Human Capital Strategy

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 15 years of experience as senior leader of an enterprise-wide human resource function at a large, complex entity 
  • Experience designing and implementing efficient and effective programs, policies, and services for a diverse workforce operating in a complex environment
  • Executive-level human resource experience 
  • Experience supporting governing boards, and in working with committees and/or subgroups on matters of human resource compliance, policies, and industry leading best practices
  • Experience delivering innovative solutions in policy and program deployment and management
  • Experience with and commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging for employees across all levels of the institution

Preferred

  • Experience in higher education environment and familiarity with the complexities of a research institution, and a demonstrated expertise in strategic human resource planning

  • Demonstrates a history of executive level leadership experience and accomplishment within a similarly complex environment
  • Ability to work effectively with executive leaders, faculty, and staff colleagues regarding key organizational, management, and human resource strategies that value operational effectiveness, superior customer service, and align culture and behavior with strategy, aspirations and values
  • Demonstrates the capacity to lead a best-in-class human resources organization
  • Ability to bring credibility and instill a sense of accessibility to the HR function through their professional qualifications and leadership ability
  • Advanced knowledge of federal and state regulations impacting; Employee benefits, especially healthcare and retirement plans, Talent acquisition, Salary and wage administration, Creative compensation strategies, Executive compensation, Employee and union relations, Performance management, Talent retention strategies, HR information systems, and Employee training
  • Strong written and oral communications skills with a broad range of constituencies
  • Strong public speaking skills
  • Effective project management skills
  • Demonstrates collaborative problem solving

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary

$280,000 - $300,000 per year based on experience.
