Assistant Professor of Design, Tenure Track

The Department of Performance and Communication Arts at St. Lawrence University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Design. This tenure-track position will begin in August 2019.

We seek candidates with a demonstrated excellence in teaching a variety of design courses at the college level, demonstrated excellence as a professional designer, and an active record of creative work and/or traditional scholarship. Preference will be given to candidates with a secondary design focus. Possible courses to be taught include but are not limited to: Scenic Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design, Props Design/Construction, Scenic Painting, Stagecraft, and Graphic Design for the Arts. The ability to CAD draft is highly desired. MFA or PhD preferred, ABD may be considered.

The ideal candidate will be able to articulate a vision for a newly launched dynamic design program, expose students to diversity through theatre praxis, pedagogy, and practitioners, and contribute to the broader performance curriculum, including courses such as Introduction to theatre and/or specialty courses.

Teaching load is 2/2 with expectations of providing three designs for the mainstage productions throughout the year and providing artistic support to visiting designers in consultation with the production team. For example, in addition to teaching two courses per semester, a candidate might design costumes and scenery for the mainstage production in the fall, and design costumes for the mainstage production while providing support for an external scenic designer in the spring.

The University Theatre season includes two faculty-directed productions, two faculty-directed dance concerts, as well as acting/directing showcases. This position is also responsible for mentoring and overseeing student designers and artisans and contributing other specialties to complement departmental offerings.
