Two Positions in Music Composition – School of Music
Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University

The School of Music in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks two exceptional artist-scholars in the area of music composition. One position is for a full-time tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor level, and the second position is for a full-time tenure-track appointment at the assistant or associate professor level, rank depending on experience. Both positions begin fall 2019.

About the School of Music
Located in one of the most expansive metropolitan centers in the United States and situated in the Sonoran desert, the ASU School of Music supports a broad range of inquiry. Programs within the School of Music lead to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Music with an optional concentration in Music and Culture; Bachelor of Music (BM) in Music with concentrations in music performance, jazz studies, music theatre, music education, music theory and composition, music therapy as well as two minors in music studies and music performance; Master of Arts (MA) in Music with concentrations in ethnomusicology or music history and literature; and Master of Music (MM) in composition, conducting, music education, music performance, performance pedagogy and music therapy. In addition, the school offers a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in composition, conducting and performance and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with a concentration in music education or musicology, as well as a graduate certificate in theory pedagogy. The music composition area is part of the Division of Music Composition, Musicology, and Music Theory. Between 25 and 30 students are enrolled as composition majors, divided almost evenly between undergraduate and graduate levels. The composition program offers the Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in composition, as well as Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in composition with concentration in Interdisciplinary Digital Media and Performance for students who have interests and skills in unique cross sections of the arts and sciences. Students pursuing these degrees engage in a multifaceted program that emphasizes creative writing, collaborative projects with other areas and departments, and the performance of their music through a variety of venues both on and off campus. The faculty strives to create a safe, supportive environment where students can explore diverse styles and techniques.

The School of Music seeks applicants who would contribute a unique voice to the composition program and provide excellent teaching to the composition and theory areas. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue and maintain a high level of creative research, teach composition and composition-related courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, teach classes in music theory including those in the core curriculum, collaborate with faculty colleagues in recruiting students and in the development of curricular initiatives, and engage in university, community and professional services. The program promotes a collegial atmosphere where all styles and techniques are welcome. Students study with all members of the composition faculty in order to engage with a range of different philosophies.

Required Qualifications:
• PhD, DMA or MFA in composition or commensurate experience;

• Demonstrated excellence or potential for excellence in teaching composition in a variety of settings;

• Evidence of significant creative achievement as demonstrated through public performances, presentations, and/or publications;

• Ability to contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

Desired Qualifications:
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate core theory classes;

• Demonstrated excellence in teaching at both graduate and undergraduate levels;

• Ability to teach in an area of specialized interest, which might include but is not limited to: contemporary popular music, music for film/video/stage, 20th/21st-century music theory, music technology, sound art, digital culture, improvisation;

• Ability to contribute to and design courses on popular music, music for film, video or stage;

• Ability to work with students, faculty, and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds;

• Ability to counsel students in a wide range of styles and techniques;

• Research interests that complement existing department strengths;

• Interest in collaborating with faculty and students in other areas of the Herberger Institute (e.g. dance, film, animation, etc.) and across the university.
