The School of Music in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks an exceptional trumpet artist-teacher. This is a full-time, tenure-track appointment, rank based on experience, beginning fall 2019.

About the School of Music
Located in one of the most expansive metropolitan centers in the United States and situated in the Sonoran desert, the ASU School of Music supports a broad range of inquiry. Programs within the School of Music lead to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Music with an optional concentration in Music and Culture; Bachelor of Music (BM) in Music with concentrations in music performance, jazz studies, music theatre, music education, music theory and composition, music therapy as well as two minors in music studies and music performance; Master of Arts (MA) in Music with concentrations in ethnomusicology or music history and literature; and Master of Music (MM) in composition, conducting, music education, music performance, performance pedagogy and music therapy. The School of Music at Arizona State University is home to one of the leading brass programs in the country. The brass faculty includes John Ericson (horn), Brad Edwards (trombone), and Deanna Swoboda (tuba/euphonium). The School’s faculty, outstanding and recognized internationally for their teaching and performing; excellent student ensembles and facilities; and a world-class curriculum make studying brass at ASU one of the best educational opportunities in the nation. In addition, frequent visiting artists further enrich the student experience. There are many opportunities for motivated brass students to perform in large ensembles, like-instrument ensembles, and chamber ensembles. The successful candidate will be an innovative individual who will participate in our effort to reimagine what arts education means in the 21st century. Our new colleague will be expected to continue performing and to contribute to the musical life of the School of Music. In addition, the candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and be committed to educating outstanding performance majors, teachers, music therapists, and scholars. Further responsibilities will include recruiting high-quality students regionally, nationally, and internationally, mentoring and assisting students in developing their professional goals, working with and advising doctoral students on final projects, and working effectively with faculty colleagues and administration in service to satisfy and advance the mission of the ASU School of Music. Other duties will include teaching trumpet-related courses such as repertoire and pedagogy, as well as coaching brass chamber music.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated excellence as an outstanding and versatile trumpet performer
  • Doctoral degree in trumpet performance or commensurate experience
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching applied trumpet at the collegiate level
  • Experience with and commitment to diverse students and audiences
  • National recognition in creative activity (performance) and/or scholarship

Desired Qualifications:
Candidates should provide evidence of demonstrated ability in one or more of these areas:

  • Familiarity with a variety of musical styles in performance and/or teaching, such as classical, jazz, contemporary, period instruments, popular music, or other areas of specialty
  • International recognition in creative activity (performance) and/or scholarship
  • Experience teaching undergraduate and graduate applied trumpet and coaching chamber music ensembles
  • Demonstrated expertise and interest in trumpet pedagogy and trumpet repertoire
  • Experience teaching trumpet performance, music education and/or music therapy majors and non-majors
  • Demonstrated success with recruitment of talented students, including students from underrepresented groups
  • The ability to work and collaborate across artistic disciplines, with people outside the arts, across campus, and in the community
  • The ability to advance innovative teaching practices
  • Experience with or demonstrated track record of interdisciplinary work
  • The ability to attract resources, including grants or other sources of support that advance the Herberger mission
