THE OPPORTUNITY
The Administrator for the Heart and Vascular Institute is an important position and represents a unique opportunity to pull together cardiac surgery and cardiology into a single operational entity to support comprehensive Cardiovascular care at SUNY Upstate. This Executive will arrive at a pivotal time in SUNY Upstate’s history and is expected to work with the team to create the strategy and infrastructure for a future Heart and Vascular Institute and to lead the growth and expansion of the program to meet the growing needs of the community in central New York.
Dr. Cynthia Taub, a cardiologist of international reputation, serves as the Chair of Medicine at Upstate. Dr. Taub is an expert in cardiovascular imaging and is the Vice President-elect for the American Society of Echocardiography. Dr. Larry Charlamb is currently the Interim Chief of Cardiology and Dr. Mehdi Marvasti is the Chief of the Division of Cardiac Surgery at SUNY Upstate. Drs. Taub, Charlamb, and Marvasti will work in partnership with the new Administrator to build, grow, and manage the cardiovascular service line. The Upstate Cardiovascular Service line aims to grow the program into the leading provider of cardiovascular care in upstate New York. Further, the Heart and Vascular Center will be supported by its own clinical budget for cardiology, cardiac surgery, and research/teaching.
The Cardiovascular Service Line Administrator will help create and operationalize a cardiovascular service line and develop the plan for the Heart and Vascular Center. They will have overarching authority for administrative operations for the cardiovascular services provided within the SUNY Upstate System, including inpatient services at the University Hospital downtown and Community Campus and all hospital ambulatory locations. To ensure efficient and effective quality service provision, this individual will drive strategic planning and execute initiatives in conjunction with the Chairs of the Departments of Medicine and Surgery and others programmatically relevant (Anesthesiology, Radiology, Emergency Medicine, and PM&R) and with Nursing leadership Utilizing extensive knowledge of underlying cardiac and vascular service requirements and benchmarks, this leader will identify national industry and regional market changes to inform key stakeholders of regulatory, financial, and programmatic developments which impact the service division. This administrator will execute the strategic vision for high-quality patient care services that are
aligned with optimal financial performance. Utilizing broad independent judgment, they will develop system policy and support essential decision-making to direct the operational structure and program service delivery models in a changing landscape, ensuring all strategic partners are engaged, aligned, and included in the process. The finalist will provide Primary role in the execution of service integration between business and academic affairs across cardiovascular departments, Surgery, Medicine, Radiology, and other areas. The finalist will drive identified service expansion opportunities for core areas in collaboration with the Senior Administration, the Chair for the Departments of Medicine and Surgery, the Chiefs of Cardiology, Vascular Surgery, and Cardiac Surgery, Nursing leadership, and other core areas. They will work directly with physician leadership and other senior leaders, evaluate service needs and deficits, and execute and continually monitor service strategies designed to ensure patient access to high-quality, patient-centered care and champion for system-wide awareness of universal design and accessibility, recognize cardiovascular-specific requirements that may be affected and discern disability-related concerns.
Short term priorities will be to establish professional and personal credibility and trust with the senior leadership team, administrative and physician leaders, physicians and clinicians, and staff across the organization and develop effective relationships with all key stakeholders. The CSLA should quickly gain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of SUNY Upstate’s culture and philosophy, markets, programs, and services in the region, including competing providers, professional practice patterns, and referral relationships, and partner with physician leaders to create a clear vision, goals, and plans They should lead the execution of the plan to preserve the current volume and grow cardiology and vascular services, and work with physician and hospital leadership to help create and operationalize the service line. This will include developing, communicating, and executing a vision and strategy to align, strengthen, and grow the Heart and Vascular Center as the leading provider of cardiac and vascular services in the region.
A minimum of 5-7 years of service line experience, including operational functions within an academic medical center, complex tertiary hospital, or health system. A preference for heart and vascular services administration experience.
