President

The Board of Visitors invites applications and nominations for the position of President of Norfolk State University (NSU). The Board seeks a dynamic, entrepreneurial, innovative and creative leader with strong academic, administrative and business acumen.

The President is the Chief Executive Officer of the University.  His/her responsibilities include leadership of the University’s academic, student service, and research programs as well as its athletic program and administrative/financial functions. The President also plays a central leadership role in ensuring that the University has sufficient public and private resources to advance its mission.

As such, NSU’s next President must be a visionary leader and creative problem-solver who can leverage existing institutional assets and strengths while positioning the University to seize new opportunities for finding its distinctive place on an increasingly competitive higher education landscape.    Proven success in leadership, resource development, and management are critical for the next President.

Conceived in a time when the higher education prospects for African Americans were limited, Norfolk State University was founded in 1935 as a vessel for new and exciting opportunities for the region’s youth. It launched initially as the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University and has the historical distinction of being the last historically black institution established in the Commonwealth of Virginia. By 1969, Norfolk State began its transformation into a vibrant, independent college.  It was granted university status in 1979.

Since then, NSU has reinvented itself to respond to the changing times—all the while remaining true to its HBCU roots.  Its most recent reinvention occurred nearly 10 years ago when NSU leaders set on a path to re-envision what the University would look like, feel like and provide to students as a 21st century institution of higher education. Out of that visioning came the University master plan—an ambitious undertaking that re-imagined the University’s physical environs as a concrete manifestation of its mission and purpose.  That re-imagining provides state-of-the-art learning, living, and gathering places for students.  It provides pedestrian-friendly pathways in and around campus. It creates an architecturally dramatic entranceway that signals all who enter have arrived at a special place.

Organizationally, Norfolk State’s academic division is comprised of two colleges, three professional schools, an off-campus center, and academic support programs. One college focuses on the Liberal Arts; the other on Science, Engineering, and Technology—the latter of which is a robust strategic emphasis for the University. The three professional schools emphasize Business, Education, and Social Work. Thirty-one undergraduate degree programs, fifteen master’s degree programs, and three doctoral degree programs are offered through these colleges and schools.
