Position Summary

The Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute (LTRI) of Sinai Health, a University of Toronto affiliated research centre, is seeking four Principal Investigators in Biomedical Discovery Research (2) and Population Health Data Science (2). The appointments will be for Full-Time Principal Investigators, rank equivalent to Assistant or Associate Professors. We seek applicants who will develop independent, outstanding and innovative research programs.

For the Biomedical Discovery Research positions, we seek researchers with expertise in one of two areas: (i) Systems, Cellular, Chemical or Molecular Biology focusing on studying and/or treating human diseases (broad biomedical sciences) such as network and systems biology, regenerative biology, immunology/microbiology, next-generation therapeutics, cellular physiology, and disease mechanisms; and (ii) One position is designated for those specializing in stem cell biology and tissue engineering related to trauma, maintenance, and regeneration of mesenchymal tissues. The successful candidate will become the inaugural Tanenbaum Chair in Musculoskeletal Regenerative Medicine at Sinai Health and the University of Toronto. Research methods may encompass functional genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, chemical biology, single-cell biology, live cell imaging, structural biology, and cell/tissue engineering, aimed at studying biological processes or developing new therapies using human or model organisms, with either a wet lab or combined computational and wet lab focus.

For the Population Health Data Science positions, we seek researchers focused on (i) Infectious diseases, including communicable disease epidemiology, mathematical modelling, pathogen genomics and phylodynamics; or (ii) Population data linkage, focusing on developing and applying innovative analytical approaches, such as machine learning algorithms for ecological, longitudinal, etiological, prognostic or comparative analysis, using diverse data sources, e.g. electronic medical records, administrative and laboratory databases, and geospatial information linkable to environmental conditions at the provincial, national or international scale. Health topics may include perinatal/maternal-child health, cancers, cardiometabolic, autoimmune and other complex diseases.

Successful candidates will join the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, known for its internationally acclaimed faculty and pioneering research across fields. The Institute emphasizes health research excellence and training young investigators, offering a research-intensive setting with advanced facilities including proteomics, single-cell and spatial genomics, robotics, and imaging within the Network Biology Collaborative Centre. Additionally, Sinai Health hosts The Centre for Phenogenomics, a premium facility for mouse models, and co-founded the Nanoscale Biomedical Imaging Facility. The Prosserman Centre for Population Health Research at the Institute hosts multidisciplinary scientists focusing on quantitative research of complex diseases, including precision health and multi-omics integration based on large-scale cohorts and biobank data.

Under the University of Toronto and Sinai Health's implementation of the Canada Research Chairs Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Action Plan, a qualified candidate may be nominated for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair, provided they are within ten years of earning their highest degree. Those exceeding this timeframe can seek eligibility through the Tier 2 justification process.

Investigators will be cross-appointed at the University of Toronto in departments that align with their expertise and research topics. The Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute collaborates extensively with the University of Toronto's research community, national and international networks. Toronto is a vibrant, safe and multicultural city with excellent quality of life.

Education and Experience Requirements

Candidates must hold a PhD, ScD, or equivalent, with postdoctoral experience and a proven research record, evidenced by outstanding publications, international conference presentations, awards, and strong referee endorsements. A history of securing external funding is beneficial. The successful candidate is expected to lead a top-tier, innovative, independent, and externally funded research program.

The Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute and Sinai Health are strongly committed to diversity within its community and welcome applications from racialized persons/persons of colour, women, Indigenous/Aboriginal People of North America, persons with disabilities, members of sexual minority groups, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas.
