Assistant Professor, Film Studies
Details: The Department of Theatre and Film invites applications for a tenure-track position in Film Studies who will teach undergraduate and graduate courses. Starting date is August 2019. The department has a thriving film culture with undergraduate majors in film studies and film production and a minor in film. The successful candidate will also participate in teaching and mentoring in the School of Cultural and Critical Studies (Popular Culture, American Culture Studies, Ethnic Studies, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexualities Studies), and may contribute to the School of Media and Communication, and other units on campus through cross-listed and/or team taught classes. In addition to teaching courses in film studies, the successful candidate will supervise the graduate instructors who teach film studies sections within the department. The position involves active contribution to fostering film culture on campus through programming and curating screenings and through advocacy for and leadership with the student film organizations, as well as adjudicating student work. Demonstrated research productivity leading to peer reviewed publication and presentations at national conferences is expected, as is advising of graduate students. The successful candidate is expected to contribute service to the department, college, university, and profession at a national level.
Qualifications: Candidates must have: a PhD in Film Studies or related field (e.g. Film and Media Studies, Cinema Studies, Cinema and Media Studies etc.), or the requirements for the degree completed by the start of employment (August 2019); expertise in history of film, experience teaching Introduction to Film, Film History, or both; and demonstrated research productivity through one or more published or in press journal articles or book chapters in film studies publications, or research presentations at national conferences. Experience teaching other film studies courses, teaching online and expertise in one or more of the following is preferred: aesthetics, audience reception, industry studies, critical race theory, and other methodologies.
