Nominations and applications are invited for the position of Dean of the College of Science & Engineering at San Francisco State University.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE.  The College of Science & Engineering is committed to providing superior education in science, engineering, and mathematics at a major comprehensive urban university.  The College offers science degrees at the undergraduate and master’s degree levels through the departments of Biology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Computer Science, Earth & Climate Sciences, Geography & Environment, Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy, and Psychology.  Additional degrees in civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering are offered through the School of Engineering. The College also includes the Estuary and Ocean Science Center at the Romberg Tiburon Campus, which is the only marine sciences research field station on the San Francisco Bay, as well as several other centers and institutes. 

The College of Science & Engineering is committed to excellence in research and teaching. Faculty in the College have internationally recognized research programs that bring in ~$15.5 million in external funding annually through major competitive grants in educational, theoretical, and experimental research, have the highest success rate of NSF Career and MRI grants in the California State University (CSU) system, and have a publication rate which is among the highest in the CSU system. Faculty have also developed a strong synergy between research, education, and social justice. The College has approximately 175 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 150 part-time Lecturers, and 90 staff.  Over six thousand students (undergraduates and graduate students) currently have majors in the College.

QUALIFICATIONS.  Applicants for this position must possess 1) a doctoral degree in a relevant field, coupled with an outstanding record of research and teaching; 2) a record of effective and innovative administrative leadership in higher education and/or professional experience; 3) a commitment to the mission of the College and the University; 4) a passion for mentoring and supporting faculty, staff, and students; and 5) a commitment to academic excellence and to serving the needs of a diverse community.

POSITION.  The Dean of the College of Science & Engineering is the chief academic, fiscal, and administrative officer of the College and reports to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs.  The Dean has oversight and/or responsibility for all aspects of curriculum planning and development; faculty and staff hiring, evaluation, and development; budget development and management; and college facilities, centers, and institutes. Along with maintaining professional activities in their field of study, the Dean is responsible for setting priorities, policies, and budgets for the College; working closely with faculty, staff, administrators, and students; sustaining an environment of academic excellence; providing encouragement and support for educational and scientific research and entrepreneurship; and promoting innovative teaching in STEM fields. The Dean is expected to demonstrate leadership in building and maintaining close relationships with alumni and the multicultural community within SFSU and the region. The Dean will also be responsible for generating external funding through grants and philanthropic opportunities to support infrastructure, research, and the planned new science building.  As a professional colleague and leader, the Dean is expected to engage collegially and cooperatively with all campus constituents.

COMPENSATION.  The salary for this position is competitive, commensurate with experience and qualifications.  A generous benefits package is provided, and the position is included in the CSU Management Personnel Program.
