Liberal Studies at New York University invites applications for four Clinical Assistant Professor positions to begin September 1, 2019, pending administrative and budgetary approval.
 
Liberal Studies provides a unique interdisciplinary educational experience to undergraduate students. The Liberal Studies Core consists of a two-year interdisciplinary global curriculum drawing on great works across civilizations. The Global Liberal Studies Bachelor of Arts, one of NYU’s premier liberal arts degrees, builds on the global core with an upper division interdisciplinary set of concentrations that direct students toward different areas of global study.
 
We seek applicants for positions in the following areas:
 
Economics
 
PhD in Economics. Candidates conversant with contrasting paradigms in international development and political economy are particularly welcome. Candidates should have the ability to teach Principles of Macroeconomics and Principles of Microeconomics, as well as upper-division seminars in their areas of expertise.
 
Life Science
 
PhD in Biology, or PhD in Science Policy with MSc in Biology, and a focus on Science Policy. Candidates should have the ability to teach seminars in Life Science that examine the fundamental discoveries and concepts of biological science with an emphasis on the global nature of scientific problems and process. Candidates with the ability to teach upper-division seminars in their areas of expertise also welcome.
 
World Cultures, Arts and Literatures
 
PhD in Classics, Foreign Language Literatures, English, Comparative Literature, World Literature, Art History with literature teaching experience, or Anthropology with arts focus. Candidates should have the ability to teach the arts produced across the globe in a variety of artistic media from antiquity to the early 18th century in our Cultural Foundations I and II sequence. Candidates with the ability to teach upper-division seminars in their areas of expertise also welcome.
 
ESL Education and Writing
 
PhD or Ed.D in Applied Linguistics, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, or Literacy, Culture, and Language Education. Candidates should have the ability to teach Academic English support courses to improve the English comprehension, writing, and speaking skills of undergraduates with TOEFL Speaking Scores in the range of 22-25.  Elements of the program also include:

  • Teaching an online version of the support course to students at away sites
  • Training for LS faculty in identifying and responding to ESL issues
  • Training of peer facilitators for conversation groups/networks

Candidates should have the ability to teach in the Liberal Studies Writing sequence in addition to their work with ESL students.
 
Minimum qualifications: a Ph.D. by the date of appointment; three years of college-level teaching experience; and demonstrated excellence in teaching.  Publications and evidence of outstanding scholarship and relevant professional activity are strongly encouraged.
 
All Liberal Studies full-time faculty hold renewable term contracts, initially three years, and later five years in duration. Faculty are eligible for promotion within the Clinical faculty ranks (Associate, Full). Faculty normally teach three classes per semester, advise undergraduates, and contribute service to Liberal Studies and to the University.
