The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), the state’s academic health, law, and human services university, seeks an innovative, collaborative, and strategic leader to serve as its next Assistant Vice President, Real Estate, Planning, and Space Management (AVP). This is an exceptional opportunity for a skilled and experienced professional to advance UMB’s mission and to provide dynamic leadership for campus master planning, real estate administration, space management, capital budgeting, and historic preservation. A member of the UMB’s administration and finance leadership team, the AVP is responsible for formulating programs, policies, and procedures to support the physical needs of the university’s complex research, academic, and administrative operations.

UMB, a vibrant urban institution comprising a 71-acre campus with 6.2 million square feet of bio-medical research and state-of-the-art clinical services and teaching space, is located in 67 buildings in the heart of downtown Baltimore. Enrolling 6,703 students in six nationally ranked professional schools—medicine, law, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, and social work. The university is a national leader in health sciences research, with $556.1 million in grants and contracts in FY 2017, and 7,360 faculty and staff. UMB is a powerful economic engine that returns more than $14 million in financial activity for every dollar invested in it by the State, resulting in a $2.8 billion annual economic impact in Maryland.

The AVP has major responsibility for the development and oversight of UMB’s facilities master plan. The AVP is a key advisor on policy related to university space management, architectural character and aesthetics, landscaping, and urban design. The AVP manages the university’s real estate assets including leasing, property and negotiating sale/purchase prices. The AVP oversees UMB’s space management systems, conducts space needs assessments, develops options for addressing needs, and implements recommendations. The AVP serves as owner representative for key facilities projects through all stages of implementation, from programming and design, to construction and move-in. The AVP manages the university’s annual capital and system-funded budget requests and five-year plans, including negotiations with the University System of Maryland.

The AVP represents UMB on several significant community boards, including Downtown Baltimore Child Care, Market Center Merchant’s Association, and Bromo Tower Arts District. The AVP also serves on numerous campus committees, and represents UMB on various University System of Maryland committees.

The AVP will be a strategic thinker with a demonstrated ability to develop creative options to address the university’s facilities and urban design needs, solve problems, and make decisions. The ideal candidate will possess significant experience in campus facilities planning and programming, space management systems, real estate, and capital budgeting. Experience at an urban university is strongly desired. A master’s degree in regional or urban planning or other relevant field is expected.
