DEAN, NEWCOMB-TULANE COLLEGE

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA

Tulane University, one of the nation’s most prestigious research institutions, seeks a visionary leader and innovator to serve as Dean of Newcomb-Tulane College. The academic home for full-time undergraduates, the College supports each student’s academic, career, and life goals from orientation through graduation and beyond, regardless of their chosen degree program. The Dean will harness the potential of a single-entry portal for incoming undergraduate students and define a coherent, unified vision for the undergraduate academic experience at Tulane University.

Founded in 1834, Tulane offers degrees across an attractive array of schools: architecture, business, law, liberal arts, medicine, public health and tropical medicine, the sciences and engineering, and social work. It is known for its highly collaborative environment, and it has developed innovative interdisciplinary research and educational programs that span all schools. Tulane has cultivated an emphasis on community service and practical experience that is infused in its programs, culture, and community. With 8,339 undergraduate and 5,110 graduate students, Tulane takes pride in providing hands-on experiences to its students who take part in research at all levels of the University and provide thousands of hours of public service to the greater New Orleans community. Tulane is integrally connected to the vibrancy and diversity of New Orleans and its culture. Following a decade of rebuilding and renewal after Hurricane Katrina, the University is operating on a balanced budget and has increased its admissions selectivity, ranking, and student diversity. Tulane is in a strong position to realize an exciting next chapter under the leadership of its 15th president, Michael Fitts.

Demands on university graduates are ever increasing as they are expected to be skilled in theoretical, technological, and social practice. Tulane is uniquely positioned to prepare students for post-graduate life by developing flexible, nimble thinkers with these skills through its single-entry undergraduate Newcomb-Tulane College. The College comprises a variety of units, programs, and offices that work together to steward an undergraduate academic experience that recognizes and supports each student, celebrates diversity, and fosters development in and out of the classroom. The College enables academic flexibility, emphasizes scholarship and engagement with faculty, provides opportunities for service, and enables independent and cross-disciplinary learning. It prepares its students to be leaders and citizens who think and engage imaginatively, critically, and ethically with local, national, and global communities.

The Dean will harness this mission and leverage partners across the University to strengthen the student experience and deliver on the promise of a Tulane undergraduate academic experience. Through engagement of faculty to sustain the strength of the core curriculum and ease academic partnerships, the Dean will advocate for the student academic experience. The Dean oversees a leadership team consisting of eight departments. This individual will ensure programs are of top quality and generate and allocate resources to support the students and develop staff excellence to achieve that goal. Tulane seeks in its Dean an exceptional leader who will define and advance the undergraduate academic experience at Tulane. The University seeks candidates who bring an earned doctorate or terminal degree in an academic discipline and a strong record of teaching and scholarship, as evidenced by tenure in their field.
