Position Description

Salisbury University seeks a dynamic, proven, and dedicated leader to serve as the Dean of the College of Health and Human Services.

The Dean of the College of Health and Human Services (College) is the chief executive and academic officer of the College. The Dean will actively support the College’s continuing pursuit of excellence in its educational, professional, outreach, and scholarship missions. The Dean provides leadership to the faculty and staff in all matters relating to curriculum and program development; accreditation, assessment, and evaluation; recruitment and retention of faculty, staff, and students; and research and scholarship. The Dean will actively pursue collaborations with other colleges, corporations, industry partners, federal, state, and local agencies, and other organizations to fulfill its mission. Finally, establishing a strong and supportive alumni base leading to meaningful endowments, scholarship opportunities, and Salisbury capital and core infrastructure gifts is required.

The Dean supervises personnel procedures of the College’s faculty and staff, secures resources, oversees fiscal planning and management, and promotes the College to internal and external audiences which may include healthcare systems, human services agencies, educational organizations, the research and development sector, and State and other governmental offices, among others.

Responsibilities

It is expected that the Dean will, in no particular order:

  • Provide strategic oversight and expertise for all aspects of the College, including positive representation of the College within Salisbury University and beyond.
  • Lead the strategic planning, growth, and development of the College in a visionary, inclusive, innovative, entrepreneurial, and fiscally sustainable manner.
  • Ensure that the College has effective programs of student recruitment, retention, advising and student success activities.
  • Expand and enhance the strength of the scholarship, teaching, and service programs within the College, building on existing strengths and creating new areas of excellence.
  • Participate in university-wide innovative efforts to create a more efficient, effective, cohesive, and high‐quality academic enterprise.
  • Support compliance with accreditation standards for College programs.
  • Develop new academic programs, including the exploration of online programs, to ensure the College is meeting the needs of students and the larger population.
  • Maintain the financial health of the College and be proficient in business processes and entrepreneurial endeavors.
  • Lead and assist in securing extramural and philanthropic resources necessary for the growth and improvement of the College.
  • Manage recruitment and retention of key personnel for expansion and innovation of future, research, and teaching endeavors.
  • As an institutional citizen, develop collaborative relationships with other units on campus to cultivate a community of mutual respect advanced by meaningful interaction.
  • Build a strong network of community alliances and support and draw upon this network to shape the future of the College across its missions.
  • Support and cooperate in a mutually beneficial relationship with alumni, professional associations, and other organizations and community leaders.
  • Engage and actively support the professions represented in the College at the local, state, national, and global levels.
  • Advocate for all disciplines and programs and all faculty, staff, and students in the College.
  • Lead with integrity and transparency, i.e., with consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations, and outcomes.
  • Foster an environment of openness and civility.
  • Listen to internal constituencies in the College and promote open communication within the College.

Qualifications and Characteristics

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or other earned doctorate in a discipline appropriate for the College and have distinction appropriate for a tenured professor appointment in the College. The successful candidate will be a dedicated, proven, and established leader with a distinguished senior leadership record in a college with health-related programs. Other preferred qualifications include:

  • A record of proven, transformative, and entrepreneurial leadership with the ability to articulate a compelling vision and to engage all constituencies in support of that vision.
  • An understanding of and vision for the future of the educational programs and professions represented in the College.
  • The ability to build a cohesive team within the College.
  • Aptitude and demonstrated success in building and justifying budgets that align with and support the strategic goals of the College and Institution.
  • Experience with and an understanding of the diverse academic disciplines represented in the College.
  • Familiarity with successfully leading and organizing accreditation activities.
  • A proven capacity to lead in the development of effective programs of student recruitment, retention, advising and student success activities.
  • A track record and support of educational excellence and a strong commitment to students.
  • Exposure to interprofessional collaboration and the ability to collaboratively work with other academic units across campus.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit and retain a diverse faculty and staff at all levels.
  • A clear commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion at all levels and experience fostering inclusive excellence and an equitable environment.
  • An ability to work effectively with faculty, students, staff, alumni, community stakeholders and partners to advance the College’s mission and create a positive working and learning environment.
  • Strong written, oral communication, and interpersonal skills.

 

College of Health and Human Services

The College of Health and Human Services provides high quality programs that prepare students for productive careers as professionals in the areas of health and human services. With undergraduate degrees in exercise science, health science, medical laboratory science, nursing, public health, respiratory therapy, and social work; master’s programs in health and human performance, nursing, and social work; and a doctoral program in nursing practice, the College provides a wide array of programs that all meet national standards for excellence.
