Purdue University invites applications and nominations for the position of dean of libraries.

 

The Purdue Libraries play a central role in learning and discovery at the university. The successful candidate for dean will lead faculty and staff focused on expanding teaching and learning in data and information literacy, digital scholarship, and undergraduate and graduate research. These efforts will be implemented in conjunction with a university-wide Integrated Data Science Initiative in collaboration with all academic colleges. The dean must have a dynamic vision for the future of library services, spaces and collections, with collaborations across Purdue campuses. The next dean will formulate, advocate, and implement strategic initiatives. The dean must value diversity and create a culture of respect and inclusion. The successful candidate will be an innovative leader with a distinguished record of accomplishment in academic librarianship and/or academic leadership and reflect a demonstrated knowledge of trends and developments in information scholarship, libraries and higher education. A commitment to quality, integrity, and the principles and ideals of a major research land-grant university is essential.

 

Purdue is transforming itself with visionary initiatives in learning, discovery, and engagement. The dean of libraries will advance these exciting initiatives at both the University and Libraries levels. The dean will also lead a staff of over 150 people with over half being faculty and professionals; ensure the Libraries play a central and collaborative role in supporting the University’s data science initiative; possess effective communication skills to provide leadership in strategic planning, policy-making, budgeting and management of the Libraries resources; maintain strong and effective working relationships with Libraries faculty and staff, and with constituents internal and external to campus; work collaboratively with the libraries at other Purdue campuses to identify system-wide connections and opportunities; collaborate with other campus units in delivery of information content and services; with its Office of Undergraduate Research, support the development and promotion of a strong information literacy and undergraduate research instruction program; support graduate education through the Graduate Research Information Portal (GRIP); oversee the University Copyright Office, the University Press, and the Undergraduate Research Office; enhance Purdue Libraries position as a national leader in information literacy with the Booker Chair in Information Literacy, data management with the Purdue University Research Repository, and digital scholarship with the Digital Scholarship and Research Commons; oversee a budget of approximately $30 million; support the growth and contributions of Libraries faculty through the promotion and tenure process; promote understanding throughout the campus community of the evolving issues of scholarly communication, including copyright, licensing, and intellectual freedom; and actively engage in library development through fundraising and promoting effective public relations for the Libraries.

 

M.L.S. from an accredited ALA institution or equivalent preferred. Second master’s or Ph.D. or equivalent preferred. Successful and increasingly significant academic experience is required.  Candidates should have a record of achievement in the areas of learning, discovery and/or engagement to warrant a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor with experience in faculty governance.

 

Salary

Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Twelve-month faculty appointment with annual vacation of 22 working days. Flexible benefit programs with open enrollments annually. Group life, medical, and disability insurance programs and TIAA-CREF or Fidelity retirement are in effect.
