Founded in 1831, NYU was established in the heart of New York City as a center of higher learning that would be open to all, regardless of national origin, religious beliefs, or social background. Since that time, it has had a remarkable trajectory and has emerged as one of the greatest stories in higher education.  Today, it is a leading research university, distinctive in its cosmopolitan character, its global outlook, and the boldness of its ambitions. It has a breadth and depth rivaled by few others; in 2018, NYU was ranked amongst the top 30 universities internationally by the Academic Ranking of World UniversitiesTimes Higher Education World University Rankings, and U.S. News & World Report. As of 2017, NYU faculty and alumni include 36 Nobel Laureates7 Turing Award winners5 Fields Medalists, over 30 Academy Award winners, over 30 Pulitzer Prize winners, dozens of United States congressional representatives, and hundreds of members of the National Academies of Sciences. As of the most recent admissions cycle, NYU received 75,037 applications for its undergraduate programs, making it the most sought after private institution for higher education in the United States. The university has established a global network that includes full degree-granting portal campuses in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai, in addition to 11 global academic centers on six continents.

The Faculty of Arts and Science is the academic heart of the university with nearly 11,000 undergraduates and some 4,000 graduate students. FAS is home to more than 1,000 full-time faculty, including nineteen members of the National Academies. The university’s reputation for scholarly excellence and impact is in large part due to the rapid ascent of many departments in FAS. Fourteen departments are ranked in the top 10, and an additional 12 are ranked in the top 20 in their respective disciplines.

President Andrew Hamilton and Provost Katherine Fleming are committed to enhancing the inclusive excellence of FAS. Under the next Dean, FAS will continue strengthening core academic disciplines while also establishing interdisciplinary partnerships across NYU that leverage the strength of its outstanding schools and colleges. The Dean for the Faculty of Arts and Science must demonstrate considerable accomplishments as a successful academic leader in a complex research university and a clear record of enhancing diversity, inclusion, and equity. The ideal candidate will have held a significant administrative leadership role, typically service as a leader of a department or division within a university, that demonstrates the capacity to navigate the scale and scope of FAS and NYU. Nominees or applicants should hold an earned doctorate with scholarly credentials suitable for tenure at the rank of Professor in a department within the Faculty of Arts and Science.
