Dean of University Libraries
Ohio University invites expressions of interest and nominations for the position of Dean of University Libraries. The University is seeking a talented, dynamic, and innovative leader to develop a vision and chart a course for the University Libraries that will continue to advance its critical role in pedagogy and research at the University. The Dean reports to the Executive Vice President and Provost of the University, is the chief administrative officer for the University Libraries, and sits on the University Council of Deans.
Established by the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 and chartered in 1804, Ohio University is the state’s first institution of higher education and one of America’s oldest public universities. Ohio University is known for its nationally ranked academic programs, its strong commitment to the liberal arts, and the quality of its faculty and their effectiveness in helping students of all backgrounds to achieve their promise.
The University’s success in developing student potential owes to the richness of student-faculty engagement and the synergistic relationships between the exceptional undergraduate and graduate degree programs on its main campus in Athens, Ohio, five regional campuses, and three extension campuses. The University brings its partnerships and the knowledge that it generates from research and scholarly activity into classrooms, learning communities, centers of excellence, guided research and artistic endeavors, and experiential academic opportunities.
Ohio University is classified as a RU/H (Research University/high research activity) institution by the Carnegie Foundation. With a main campus in Athens, five regional campuses, and a strong outreach/elearning program, the University has a current enrollment of 36,215 (20,313 on the Athens campus, 6,480 on the regional campuses, 8,497 outreach/e-learning students, and 925 medical students).
The Ohio University Libraries play an important role in maintaining its well-regarded academic programs and contribute significantly to the diverse, dynamic, and collegial atmosphere that is a hallmark of the institution. With library entrances increasing by 63% over the last five years, the Libraries are vibrant hubs of activity and learning. The OU Libraries is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Center for Research Libraries, OhioLINK, and the Inter-University Council of Ohio.
The successful candidate will bring to this role significant and progressive library administrative experience and management skills and an understanding of the operations and goals of a major research university. Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to the educational and service missions of libraries, a commitment to innovation in collections, spaces, technologies, and/or services, and to an active staff development program. Candidates should be committed to securing external funds through grants and/or private fundraising. Communication and interpersonal skills are a major requirement for this position, along with an ability to foster a collegial working environment in the libraries and be a catalyst for strengthening staff diversity. An MLIS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited program is required, with a second advanced degree preferred.
