The sewing assistant will provide expert student support in fabric preparation, pattern layout, marking, assembly, and pressing while demonstrating industrial-sewing, hand-sewing, and fine-finishing techniques. The person in this position will maintain a professional environment in the studio and ensure consistency in fit aesthetic based on student design and department standards. The sewing assistant will communicate effectively with students and staff, establishing professional relationships. Additionally, the assistant will help the fashion department in presenting and conducting fits for live models to ensure proper fitting.
Daily duties include measuring and evaluating samples, ensuring all student work is high quality, assisting students in design changes as necessary, and supporting students from start to finish in garment completion. Other tasks will include collaborating with students to make sure garment specifications are viable and establishing control standards and office procedures for the technical team.

Work Hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.

Minimum qualifications:
- Knowledge and skill in sewing with a minimum of two years of experience
- Ability to identify apparel flaws quickly and to adjust designs effectively on the spot
- Commitment to strong work ethic and high-performance standards
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while seeking continual development and growth opportunities
- Professional interest in the clothing industry
- Excellent attention to detail and strong communication skills
- Experience in operating industrial sewing machines, industrial sergers, and specialty sewing machines
Preferred qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in fashion design or closely related program
- Experience and skills in leading live fittings, evaluating overall fit with the ability to make necessary fit and pattern corrections to achieve the desired fit
- Knowledge and skill in commercial fit and pattern standards, corrections, grading, construction methods
- More than five years of industry experience within technical design and apparel manufacturing
