The Center for English as a Second Language, housed in the College of Humanities at the University of Arizona, seeks a highly motivated and visionary leader for the position of Director of the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL). CESL is the only ESL Center in the state of Arizona accredited nationally by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). CESL offers non-credit English as a second language courses, teacher training, English language assessment, and professional development programs promoting cultural and linguistic diversity. Unique student and client numbers average 1,000 annually and represent 25 to 35 nations. This position may require travel but is primarily in-person, and residency in the Tucson, Arizona area is required. This leadership position also has Career Track faculty status.
The Directorship is a full-time, year-round position overseeing the center’s personnel as well as managing all strategic, academic, legal, and financial aspects of CESL. Opportunities for teaching and research exist. The Director oversees FTE faculty, faculty coordinators, adjunct instructors, tutors, staff members, student workers, volunteers, and students and reports to the Associate Dean of the College of Humanities. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
PROGRAM OVERSIGHT AND DEVELOPMENT:
- Actively pursue new markets, programs and initiatives worldwide to attract and increase number of students
- Ensure effective function of the administrative and academic components of programs within the Center
- Develop new and existing programs, including travel, grant writing, and fundraising
- Monitor changes in the Center and the University as well as national and international trends in international educational exchange and develop strategies to adjust to these changes
- Oversee promotional activities
- Participate actively in local, regional, and national professional organizations
FISCAL MANAGEMENT:
- Oversee the Center's fiscal policy, processes, and long-term planning
- Be directly involved with day-to-day financial decisions and the budgeting process
- Actively seek out new sources of revenue worldwide
NETWORKING AND MARKETING:
- Annually attend and/or present at relevant conferences (i.e., TESOL Int’l, AAAL, UCIEP, NAFSA, etc.)
- Cultivate a professional network to maintain and elevate the profile of the Center and in support of fulfilling the mission of the Center
- Support and participate in marketing initiatives, e.g. CESL newsletter
PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT:
- Establish and promote a supportive and collegial atmosphere in the Center
- Determine faculty and staff assignments
- Evaluate and assess performance
- Approve appointments, reappointments, promotions, dismissals, or non-renewals
- Encourage professional development of faculty and staff
CURRICULUM AND PROGRAM EVALUATION:
- Subject curriculum and program to ongoing review and revision in response to current research, emerging needs of learners, and the initiative of the faculty, in accordance with the Center's mission
CAMPUS AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH:
- Attend College of Humanities' heads and directors meetings and retreats
- Attend College of Humanities’ events (such as Homecoming, Welcome receptions, Tucson Humanities Festival, etc.)
- Actively promote a commitment to the internationalization of the University campus
- Establish and maintain partnerships with University academic and student-service departments as well as relevant community agencies
OTHER DUTIES:
- On an occasional, as-needed basis, teach or substitute for classes in different programs
- As needed, serve on College- and University-level committees, task forces, etc.
- Other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of and experience in academic preparation for ESL students, ESP, and computer-assisted ESL instruction
- Excellent communication skills
- Current knowledge of SEVIS rules and regulations governing non-immigrant (F-1) student status
- Proficiency in at least one language other than English
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- This position requires an earned doctorate in TESOL/Applied Linguistics, Educational Leadership, or a closely-related field with at least 10 years of ESL/EFL teaching experience and a successful record of language program administration.
- Substantial administrative experience in a U.S. university or college intensive English program
- Extensive experience in marketing and recruitment for a self-supporting U.S. university or college intensive English program
- Experience with budgeting and fiscal management
- ESL teaching experience in a university or college intensive English program
- Experience working abroad
- Experience designing and implementing teacher-development programs
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Record of active involvement in relevant professional organizations, e.g. TESOL International
- Demonstrated expertise in personnel management, particularly group dynamics and change management
- Record of professional publications and presentations.
