Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration

Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration

George Mason University (“Mason”), Virginia’s largest and most diverse public research university, seeks a seasoned and innovative finance and operations executive to serve as its next Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration (SVP). Located in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and known for its entrepreneurial spirit and rapid emergence, Mason is one of the most remarkable success stories in the past half-century of American higher education.

Mason was established in 1957 as the northern Virginia branch of the University of Virginia and became an independent public university in 1972. In the decades since, it has been on a steep growth trajectory. It is now a major national research university with a deep-seated mission of access to excellence and a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. In 2016, the university achieved a Tier 1 research designation and in fall 2018 was named one of the top 150 universities in the nation by U.S. News & World Report and one of the top 95 in the nation by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s Academic Ranking of World Universities.

With an enrollment of more than 37,000, including students from 130 countries and 50 states, Mason continues to grow and is responsible for about half of all the enrollment growth in Virginia public universities over the last decade. With three Northern Virginia campuses – and an international campus near Seoul, South Korea – Mason’s location just outside of the nation’s capital provides exceptional opportunities for the university to engage the U.S. government, international organizations, and major corporations in a myriad of industries.

This is a pivotal moment in the university’s trajectory and an opportune time to join its senior leadership team. Reporting to the President and collaborating closely with the Executive Vice President/Provost (Provost) and the Board of Visitors, Mason seeks an SVP who will help lead the next stage of Mason’s impressive growth by providing a vision for fiscal strategies and operational effectiveness while also fostering a community-wide ethos of innovation, collaboration, and accountability. Direct reports to the SVP include: finance and accounting; human resources and payroll; facilities management, planning, financing and construction; information technology services; university police and emergency safety; purchasing and accounts payable; budget and strategic planning; auxiliary enterprises; transportation and parking services.

The successful SVP candidate will possess technical expertise and broad managerial experience combined with a collegial style that will engender trust and foster collaboration across the university. The SVP will be expected to skillfully and responsibly manage the university’s financial affairs, improve the efficiency and effectiveness of campus operations, steward its assets, manage risk, and provide astute financial counsel to guide the university in achieving its aspirations. Key to the SVP’s success will be the ability to partner effectively with senior academic leaders and to help realize the university’s current growth and innovation strategy. The candidate also must clearly and effectively articulate the university’s financial direction and maintain dialogue with faculty leadership on financial and budgetary matters.
