Open Rank Professor of Business

The Hope College Department of Economics & Business invites applications for an open rank business tenure-track position to start Fall 2019 (all business fields are encouraged to apply with some preference for expertise).  Responsibilities include teaching, scholarly research, program leadership, and advising undergraduate students. Candidates should demonstrate an ability to combine teaching excellence with scholarly activity; a Ph.D is desired.

At Hope, we approach teaching and scholarship and community a bit differently.  For example, we seek candidates who (a) enjoy and pursue relevant scholarship, but don't want that to be the only aspect of their career, (b) excel at rigorous and relational teaching, (c) fully live out their Christian faith, (d) seek an academic community and culture that wants you to succeed and to experience a holistic well-being, and (e) profess their academic discipline, yet seek to do so in the context of the liberal arts tradition.

Inquiries about the position can be directed to Dr. Thomas Smith, Search Committee Chair (tsmith@hope.edu).  Formal application and all relevant materials--including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, graduate transcripts (unofficial version is acceptable for application), teaching evaluations, and a statement describing how the candidate's faith aligns with the mission of Hope College--are to be submitted electronically as part of the online application.  In addition, please enter the contact information for three references on the application.  Those references will be contacted by Human Resources to submit a letter of recommendation.  Additional material may be requested at a later date.

A review of all completed applications received by October 15 will receive full consideration.  Applications received after this date will also be considered.

About the Department of Economics and Business

Hope College is a Christian co-educational, residential liberal arts undergraduate college affiliated with the Reformed Church in America that aspires to be faithful, welcoming, and transformational.  Therefore, the Department of Economics and Business shapes its identity on (a) a business curriculum grounded in the liberal arts tradition, (b) an intimate academic environment that fosters high student/faculty collaboration, and (c) a Christian perspective that informs both our curriculum content and our teaching pedagogy.

This identity, and the vision we have for educating servant leaders, provides a robust explanation for the type of faculty member in our department.  It also informs the qualities and aspirations we are looking for in the people we hire.  Individually, we have an appreciation for the liberal arts and the freedom to cross disciplinary boundaries in our teaching and research.  Collectively, our faculty has extensive professional experience in business and government, as well as academic backgrounds that range beyond conventional business and economic specializations.  Finally, the vast international experiences of our faculty are important in educating people for leadership in a culturally diverse world.
