The University of Missouri (“Mizzou” or “MU”) seeks an accomplished, strategic, and collaborative leader to serve as its next Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (Provost). This is a compelling opportunity to advance the academic, research, and engagement enterprise at one of the nation’s leading comprehensive public universities at a time in which the institution is experiencing historic highs in the areas of student success, research & scholarship productivity, meaningful engagement with Missouri citizens, state appropriations, and alumni support. The next Provost will advance the University's strategic direction and provide leadership for faculty, students, and staff to further achieve excellence.
MU is a proud member of the Association of American Universities (AAU). With total annual research expenditures of $465 million, it is designated as a Research 1 University by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education and, as Missouri’s 1862 land-grant university, it has an annual impact of approximately $5 billion on the state’s economy. MU’s 2,300 faculty are world-recognized for their research, teaching, clinical and engagement accomplishments. The faculty recipients of the Nobel Prize, highly prestigious awards and honors, and members of the National Academies. In the last five years, Mizzou has strengthened all areas of the University, including the research enterprise, faculty and staff recruitment and retention, student success and enrollment, and philanthropic giving. Today, MU is recognized as a leading national institution on a strong upward trajectory with enormous potential for continued success and impact in the future. Mizzou is the state's largest university, offering more than 300 degrees and certificates across 13 schools and colleges, which collectively serve as vital knowledge centers for the entire state. The University contains a robust, successful clinical and research medical enterprise, including MU Health Care, the leading healthcare provider in Mid-Missouri, whose operations total over $1 billion. As a land-grant institution, MU’s Office of Extension and Engagement directly impacts all 114 counties in Missouri and the City of St. Louis and provides access to the University's resources and expertise.
Reporting to the President, the Provost serves as MU’s chief academic officer and is responsible for all academic programs, operations, planning, and continued support and growth of the research enterprise. In close partnership with the President, the Provost will guide the implementation of the next strategic plan, advance the academic and research trajectories through shared faculty governance, and leverage a highly collaborative and inclusive culture on campus to promote the recruitment and retention of faculty, staff, and students. The Provost will need to support the institutional systems and infrastructure, further faculty excellence in teaching and research, and strengthen key areas of investment in enrollment and student success. The next Provost will possess the ambition and skill to match the high aspirations of university leadership, students, faculty, staff, alums, and friends who can maximize its many assets to further shape the future of Mizzou and achieve even higher levels of distinction and success.
