Assistant University Librarian for External Relations

Assistant University Librarian for External Relations

The Stanford University Libraries (Libraries) seek an intelligent, dynamic, and experienced professional to work closely with the Ida M. Green University Librarian and Director of Academic Resources (University Librarian) to lead and provide vision for its development and marketing and communications activities.

The Assistant University Librarian for External Relations (AUL) will serve as a core member of the University Librarian’s Libraries Executive Group, the senior leadership team for the Libraries, and, working with other units on campus and within the libraries, proactively drive the identification and cultivation of potential donors as well as oversee the Libraries’ marketing efforts and external communications.

Based in beautiful Palo Alto, California, the AUL will have the rare opportunity to work within, and contribute to, one of the most prestigious library systems and universities in the world. With more than 15 libraries and 400-plus employees, the Stanford University Libraries are a dynamic network of resources, spaces, and subject experts designed to stimulate intellectual curiosity. With over 12 million items, 50 subject specialists, and a broad spectrum of services, the opportunities for contributing to and transforming scholarship are infinite. The Libraries’ dedication to discoverability and information management also means it is engaged in dynamic global partnerships.

Stanford was founded almost 150 years ago on a bedrock of societal purpose. The University’s mission is to contribute to the world by educating students for lives of leadership and contribution with integrity; advancing fundamental knowledge and cultivating creativity; leading in pioneering research for effective clinical therapies; and accelerating solutions and amplifying their impact.

Reporting to the University Librarian, the Assistant University Librarian for External Relations will oversee and implement the strategy for effective external community engagement for Stanford Libraries and advise on programs focused on effective engagement within Stanford.

The AUL will facilitate a culture of collaboration between development, communications, outreach and other units, schools and departments within the libraries and across campus, and develop a deep understanding of Stanford Libraries’ programs and outcomes. This role will be a passionate, visible, and informed advocate for Stanford Libraries and engage with the broader community while positioning the Libraries for improved fundraising and visibility.

The successful candidate will have experience leading a unit that relies on strong collaboration and coordination across multiple teams in one or more institutions similar to the Stanford Libraries, usually associated with five or more years of experience; for consideration at the Library Manager 2 level experience usually associated with seven or more years. An undergraduate degree in a relevant subject is required, and a master’s degree in information science or library science or the equivalent in experience is required, with an additional master’s degree or PhD desired. Additionally, the successful candidate will have experience and/or education in effective communication tactics and strategy, experience in strategic communications program development, and excellent command of written and spoken English.

The expected pay range for this position is $146,000 to $187,000 per annum for Library Manager 1. The expected pay range for Library Manager 2 is $179,000 to $200,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
