THE SEARCH

The Museum of Science (MOS), one of the world's largest science centers and the most attended cultural institution in New England, seeks a forward-thinking and strategic financial leader to serve as its next Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Reporting to the President and working in collaborative partnership with other museum leadership and the Board of Trustees, the CFO will bring exceptional financial modeling and analysis, planning, and systems thinking expertise to support the strategic vision and growth imperatives of this exceptional museum.

Established in 1830, the Museum of Science currently engages an annual audience of approximately five million—on site in Boston, in classrooms throughout the country, in other museums around the world, and online. Its home since 1951 has been Science Park, a sprawling campus straddling the cities of Boston and Cambridge and overlooking the Charles River Dam. Each year, MOS reaches about 1.4 million visitors onsite who engage with its world-class, hands-on exhibits and programs in the William and Charlotte Bloomberg Science Education Center; the Thompson Theater of Electricity; the Charles Hayden Planetarium; and the Mugar Omni Theater, the only domed IMAX screen in New England. The Museum of Science reaches almost 3 million more people annually through EiE®, its award-winning curricula division, and via virtual events, web-based content, and social media content.

Reporting to the President, the CFO is responsible for overseeing the Museum’s Finance and Building Operations Divisions, including Accounting, Facilities, Information Technology, Security, Accounts Payable, Business Services, Financial Data Services, and Events, ensuring proper financial accounting, internal controls, safe and compliant facility operations, and successful public and private events. The Chief Financial Officer directs and oversees the Museum’s financial activities and models the highest level of excellence, creativity, and support for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Overseeing a team of five direct reports, including an Executive Assistant, Controller, Vice President of Facilities & Building Operations, Senior Director of Event Strategy, Sales & Operations, and Associate Vice President of information Technology & Security, the CFO will demonstrate an ability to lead high-performing, diverse teams with trust and transparency while simultaneously working collaboratively with stakeholders across the institution to ensure the Museum’s financial and operational strength, agility, and integrity. They serve as the Assistant Treasurer and provide staff support to the full Board of Trustees and to its Finance, Investment, and Audit and Risk Committees.

The CFO will create and develop forecasts and long-term financial planning processes and analyses to predict future growth for the Museum and will engage with other executive leaders to define new business models, set priorities, and execute strategies that fulfill the Museum’s mission. The CFO will be a change-agent, exercising a level of risk tolerance, particularly as they engage with leadership to diversify revenue streams in pursuit of a more diversified business model. The CFO will also embark on a holistic review of all financial systems, procedures, and policies via a process that identifies operational efficiencies and enhances financial operations and systems in support of the Museum’s ambitious goals.

The salary range for this role is $290 - $350K.
