University of Massachusetts Amherst

Dean, College of Engineering

Amherst, Massachusetts

The University of Massachusetts Amherst seeks a visionary and strategic leader to serve as the next Dean of the College of Engineering. This is an exceptional opportunity to build on the successes of a highly regarded engineering college at a Top 30 public research university. In recent years, the College has seen strong growth in enrollment, academic selectivity, faculty recruitment, sponsored research, and program creation. A newly formed department of Biomedical Engineering is but one example of significant steps taken by the College in the last six years.

The College of Engineering is notable for an emphasis on innovation and excellence, a highly collaborative culture, and a student-centered approach that has resulted in a remarkable record of placements and professional success. Established and emerging research strengths include advanced materials, aviation systems, biosensors, catalysis and reaction engineering, climate adaptation, cybersecurity, healthcare analytics, nanomaterials and nanoelectronics, renewable energy, and sustainable infrastructure. Engineering faculty drive many collaborative initiatives at the University: the College has been active in the development of a vibrant STEM ecosystem that includes applied life sciences; advanced materials and manufacturing; and energy, climate science, and sustainability. The next Dean will extend this record of success, consistent with UMass Amherst’s intention to rank among the top 20 public research universities nationwide.

The largest public university in New England and the flagship of the University of Massachusetts system, UMass Amherst has more than 1,300 full-time tenure and non-tenure track faculty. It serves nearly 23,400 undergraduates from 78 countries and every state in the union and approximately 7,000 graduate students. Total research and development expenditures were more than $210 million in 2018, approximately one-third of the research and development expenditures across the University of Massachusetts system. Two years removed from a record-breaking capital campaign, UMass Amherst has undertaken over $1.4 billion in new construction and renovations, with substantial investments in the sciences, all with public and private support.

UMass Amherst seeks a Dean of Engineering with the ingenuity, intellectual passion, and tactical strengths to lead the College during its next phase of dynamic growth. On campus, the Dean will be a natural collaborator and coalition builder, partnering with colleagues to develop compelling programs, sustain an ambitious research agenda, recruit outstanding faculty, and meet the College’s infrastructure requirements. Externally, the Dean will engage with alumni, government, and industry partners to increase the College’s resource base and expand the reach and impact of its programs. In all these efforts the Dean will work to enhance the College’s culture and pay strong attention to diversity and inclusion, consistent with the campus Strategic Plan.
