William Paterson University (WPU) invites nominations for and applications from outstanding academic leaders with a superior record of academic administration, scholarship and teaching excellence appropriate for a doctoral granting institution. The Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer of the University and reports directly to the President, a member of the University’s Cabinet and acts on behalf of the President in his absence. The next Provost will have the opportunity to refine and extend an academic vision through developing new academic programs and continuing to implement the WPU Strategic Plan 2012-2022. The Provost is responsible for leadership of all academic initiatives and operations, including Undergraduate Academic Development and Advisement, Graduate Studies, Honors College, Cheng Library, School of Continuing  and Professional Education, Center for Teaching Excellence, Sponsored Research, International Education, Educational Opportunity Program, Transfer Programs and Special Sessions, Institutional Research and Assessment, and a degree completion program at Mercer County Community College. More than 600 faculty, managers and professional staff serve the colleges, departments and divisions of academic affairs with a total budget of $91 Million.

Founded in 1855 as a normal school and distinguished as the third oldest public institution in the state, William Paterson University has evolved into a comprehensive public university that offers a challenging, supportive and highly diverse educational environment with an enrollment of over 10,000 traditional and nontraditional undergraduate and graduate students from 33 states and 38 countries. Touting a long history of educating first-generation college students, the University offers more than 250 academic programs through five colleges: College of the Arts and Communication, Cotsakos College of Business, College of Education, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and College of Science and Health. The University also provides quality learning opportunities through its School of Continuing and Professional Education. In 2015, WPU was recognized as a Hispanic Serving Institution and since 2011, has been honored annually as a military-friendly institution. WPU is ranked in the First Tier of Best Regional Universities-North by U.S. News & World Report for 2018. William Paterson University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education with its next scheduled periodic review in 2020-21.

The successful candidate will provide overall academic leadership, work with the President, and in addition to setting and implementing the vision and establishing priorities, have experience in the following priority areas: Leading, inspiring and developing a leadership team and holding it/them accountable; thinking and acting strategically in positioning the University within the state, national and international higher education environment; facilitating a transformational environment of empowerment across the entire institution; ensuring students have suitable levels of guidance, instruction, mentoring and support; increasing engagement with local and state community business leaders; maintaining the affordability and quality of WPU while continuing to embrace its public mission; promoting the strengths, advocating for the needs and elevating the visibility of WPU among the New Jersey Association of State Colleges and Universities; and other priorities as established.

The required qualifications include an earned doctorate from an accredited institution; a progressive record of increasing academic leadership; and a distinguished record of teaching, scholarly achievement and professional accomplishments sufficient to qualify for appointment at the rank of full professor in an academic department.
