Dean, College of Computing
The Georgia Institute of Technology invites applications and nominations for the position of dean of the College of Computing. The selected individual will also hold the John P. Imlay Jr. Chair.
One of the top-ranked academic programs in the nation, the College of Computing consists of the Schools of Computer Science, Interactive Computing, and Computational Science and Engineering. The College offers undergraduate degrees in Computer Science and Computational Media, and graduate degrees in Computer Science and Human-Centered Computing. Through collaborations with other Georgia Tech colleges, the College of Computing also offers graduate degrees in Cybersecurity, Machine Learning, Robotics, Human-Computer Interaction, Bioengineering, and Analytics, among others. The College has a tradition of innovation in education, pioneering the threads concept in undergraduate education and the highly successful Online Master of Science in Computer Science. Georgia Tech’s current fall 2018 enrollment is nearly 33,000 students, split about evenly between graduate and undergraduate students. Computer science is the most popular major at Georgia Tech with about 2,400 undergraduates and 8,850 graduates enrolled this fall. The College of Computing granted 624 bachelor’s, 1,048 master’s, and 41 Ph.D. degrees in the 2017-2018 academic year. The College has about 82 tenured or tenure-track faculty members, 50 teaching faculty, 45 research faculty, and 105 support staff and executed $30 million in research last year.
The College of Computing is one of six colleges at Georgia Tech, all home to highly ranked programs. The College’s mission is central to the institute’s future, and it collaborates closely with one of the top-ranked and largest College of Engineering in the nation. Interdisciplinary efforts are encouraged and also exist with the other colleges: the College of Sciences, the Ernest Scheller Jr. College of Business, the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, and the College of Design. In addition, there are ongoing efforts and program collaborations are encouraged with the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) and Georgia Tech Professional Education (GTPE). GTRI is an organization with nearly $450 million in research per year and 1,800 research faculty and staff.
As chief academic and administrative officer of the College of Computing, the dean is responsible for providing leadership for the following specific activities: leadership and strategic planning, academic programs, faculty appointments, budgetary and administrative oversight, stewardship and development, and multidisciplinary partnerships. The ideal candidate will be an intellectual leader among faculty and among peers nationally and globally, a strong advocate for the teaching and research mission of the College, a preeminent university citizen, and an energetic and conscientious administrator, familiar with issues in higher education particularly issues dealing with technology, computer science, engineering, and science. Further, the dean will have proven success in promoting and building a diverse community, and shares Georgia Tech’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion of under-represented groups on campus and in the technology workforce.
