Assistant Professor/Associate Professor

Overview of Positions

Boise State University announces two tenure-track faculty positions in human-environment systems science. Competitive candidates will demonstrate expertise and interest in quantitative and integrative approaches to social-biological-physical systems, with the goal of addressing sustainability challenges. We encourage applicants from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds including geography, geoscience, biological science, climate science, social science, economics, math, engineering, and computational and data sciences.

Geospatial Science

We seek an individual who applies innovative geospatial approaches to understanding processes and relationships across spatial and temporal scales in human-environment systems. Candidates may utilize novel data streams or develop and apply models to a wide range of topics at the interface of the environment and society, including, but not limited to, climate change, land use change, biodiversity, urbanization, and ecosystem services.

Complex Systems

We seek an individual who develops novel complex systems/big data approaches to understand, model, and predict social-ecological system dynamics. Candidates may employ theoretical, empirical or computational tools from the fields of complex systems, network science and data science in order to address human-environment system challenges at local to global scales.

The Human-Environment Systems Mission and Vision:

The new faculty members will join the recently established Human-Environment Systems (HES) Institute at Boise State. Housed in the College of Innovation and Design, HES builds capacity to resolve the critical environmental challenges of our time by creating a transdisciplinary research and learning environment that integrates social and biophysical disciplines. Our collaborative team aspires to create actionable knowledge in support of a sustainable, just, and prosperous world. More details can be found in our strategic plan. We welcome applicants that bring diverse perspectives to our research and teaching community.

Research and Teaching Expectations:

We seek applicants who can contribute to Boise State’s academic excellence by developing an integrated program of research, teaching, and service that also broadens participation and diversity to more effectively address the complex challenges of coupled human-environment systems.

Research: Successful candidates will be able to 1) build a transdisciplinary research program founded in team science, 2) create knowledge to address human-environment system challenges, 3) disseminate that knowledge in a variety of ways, including via high-impact publications, 4) secure extramural funding, and 5) help develop a leading program in human-environment systems science.

Teaching:  Successful candidates will be passionate educators with a strong commitment to using evidence-based instructional practices to deliver high quality undergraduate and graduate education. Courses will be offered through the College of Innovation and Design and collaborating departments. Expected teaching load is two classes per year. Teaching responsibilities will be aligned with the candidate’s training and will emphasize quantitative approaches in human-environment systems science.

We welcome applicants at the Assistant Professor level as well as exceptional candidates at the Associate Professor level who exhibit a proven record of excellence.

Minimum Qualifications: PhD, at the time of appointment, in a relevant field, with an emphasis on quantitative methods.

Salary and Benefits: Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. An excellent benefits package is available for eligible employees. For more information visit: http://hrs.boisestate.edu/careers/benefits/.
