The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center seeks a strategic, collaborative and results-oriented leader of distinguished scholarship and administrative accomplishment to assume the position of Dean of the College of Population Health. https://hsc.unm.edu/college-of-population-health/
The Dean will provide visionary and innovative leadership to a newly-founded and growing dynamic college with a quarter-century history of an accredited Master of Public Health program, within a minority serving institution. We are located within the Health Sciences Center with a vision to work with community partners to help New Mexico make more progress in health and health equity than any other state. The majority of New Mexican’s are people of color, many who live in rural/frontier areas characterized by concentrated inequalities.
• The Dean will promote the COPH mission of academic excellence in education and research, service and practice and be committed to advancing our mission of community-engaged education and scholarship grounded in social justice to improve the health of the diverse populations in New Mexico and the Southwest.
• The Dean will promote and uphold the College’s commitment to health access, diversity/ inclusion and equity. The Dean will lead faculty and staff through the next phase of the College’s growth, to find opportunities for prevention to meet 21st Century population health challenges.
• The Dean will advance the educational, research, service and public health practice and policy missions of the College, working within a structure of shared governance with the college’s leadership team, faculty, staff, and students, with the University of New Mexico, and with core external stakeholders.
UNM College of Population Health (COPH)
Founded in 2016, The University of New Mexico College of Population Health is the second of its kind in the United States, and the first to offer a bachelor’s degree. A model for the nation, it produces leaders who make communities healthier and helps clinicians comply with the Affordable Care Act. It strives to improve the health of diverse populations in New Mexico, the Southwest, the U.S./Mexico border and tribal sovereign nations.
• With a strong focus on emphasizing prevention & wellness, the college trains students in skills that include: Health Policy Development and Analysis; Health Data Analysis; Community Advocacy; Improving health care’s delivery and quality and Preventing Disease.
• The multifaceted curriculum transcends the traditional fields of medicine and health education. Students learn about health care systems, finance, health policy and health law for careers in community prevention, wellness and more.
• The College has developed significant partnerships with Businesses; Communities’ Health Systems; Neighborhood groups; Nonprofit and government agencies, as well as Policy entities, including Native American Tribes and local and state governments.
• In September 2017, COPH researchers were awarded a five-year $7M federal grant that establishes a new center to develop more effective behavioral health interventions for the state’s under-resourced, racially, ethnically and geographically diverse communities. The Transdisciplinary Research, Equity and Engagement Center for Advancing Behavioral Health (TREE Center) will bring together researchers in multiple disciplines from across the university.
• The College of Population Health (COPH), UNM’s newest college, is committed to training New Mexico’s future “population health workforce”. Just two years old, the college has already tripled enrollment and grant funding. It is the fastest growing college at UNM. COPH offers both a Master Public Health (MPH) degree and the only Bachelor of Science in Population Health (BSPH) degree in the U.S. We are also developing a doctoral program in population health.
The Dean will be responsible for enhancing the COPH visibility, academic excellence, and connection across the University, the southwest region, and beyond. She/he/they will join a collaborative group of community of scholars and leaders and will serve on a number of campus-wide and community-oriented committees. The Dean will generate resources to support the College’s mission, manage its operations, and exercise authority over the COPH programs and budget.
• Any professional earned doctoral degree with training or experience in Public Health or Population Health.
• National/international reputation and a professional record that merits appointment as a full professor with tenure is also preferred;
• Demonstrated record of building and growing an education program in Public or Population Health;
• A strong record of NIH or extramurally funded research and scholarship in the field of public health or population health, including experience with multidisciplinary, translational research and building team science;
• Demonstrated ability to establish diversity and inclusion goals, policies, procedures and processes that promote an institutional and relational climate of access, inclusion, diversity, equity and multiculturalism;
• A strong record of peer-reviewed publications and other scholarly products with national/international notability;
• Experience in strategic planning, budgetary management, administrative processes, academic policy, and effectively managing human resources in academic programs;
• Interest and willingness to lead fundraising and development efforts;
• Proven ability to recruit and retain excellent faculty and professional staff and promote their well-being;
• Experience with academic program accreditation policies and procedures.
