Vice President for Finance and Treasurer, Chief Financial Officer

Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey seeks an experienced and highly qualified financial leader to assume the role of Vice President for Finance and Treasurer/CFO. The Vice President, who reports directly to the President Gregory Dell’Omo, will manage the institution’s financial and business affairs, while serving as a key member of the University’s executive leadership team. The new Vice President will be expected to assume responsibilities early in 2019.

The University was founded in 1865 as Trenton Business College. By the turn of the century, teacher education was added to a curriculum that had focused on training young men and women for business careers. The first baccalaureate degree was offered in 1922 and in 1957, offerings in liberal arts, science, and secondary education were added. On April 13, 1994, Rider was officially granted university status and became Rider University.  However, it is not our history alone that defines us, but our future—the ability to rethink our vision in fundamental ways, and come together to grow our students and institution as never before. In that vision, we reimagine education as a vibrant, holistic experience, exciting and engaging in ways that go beyond classroom learning to real world experiences. With an enrollment of approximately 4100 undergraduate and 1000 graduate students, the University offers programs on its 280 acre residential campus in Lawrenceville and on the Westminster College campus in Princeton. Seventy-one percent of the undergraduate student population, most of whom are of traditional college age, come from New Jersey. Approximately 60 percent of full-time undergraduate students live on campus in one of 21 residential buildings. In the fall of 2017, the known ethnicity of undergraduates was as follows: 58.3 percent white, non-Hispanic; 12.6 percent Black, non-Hispanic; 15.3 percent Hispanic; 4.6 percent Asian, non-Hispanic; 3.4 percent non-resident aliens; 3.4 percent two or more races, non-Hispanic. The 246 faculty members teach in 71 undergraduate programs and 28 graduate degree programs.

The Vice President for Finance and Treasurer reports directly to President Greg Dell’Omo and works in collaboration with a dynamic team of professionals in the oversight of the Associate Vice President and Controller, Assistant Vice President for Planning and Budget, and the Associate Vice President for Information Technologies. This individual will serve as the primary liaison with the Board of Trustees committees on Audit, Investment, and Business Affairs. The successful candidate is a member of the Senior Leadership Team and will partner with the other members to imagine and implement a strategic vision of Rider University resources and operations consistent with the strategic plan, “Our Path Forward.” The Vice President will be expected to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and alumni in crafting and executing this vision. With an operating budget of approximately $150M, the VPFT/CFO will work with the university community to address issues such as financial planning and forecasting, cash flow management, cost control, experience working with banks and ratings agencies, continuing to strengthen enrollment, generating new revenue streams, weighing aspirations against resources and overseeing reliable operating budgets, while building strategic academic business models, integrating financial matrices with long-range plans, and identifying new resources for program and infrastructure investment.

To provide the leadership required in this position, the new Vice President should possess a combination of personal qualities with a proven record of progressively responsible leadership. The Vice President will be a bold, creative and energetic leader with a deep sense of integrity, a sense of humor and an outstanding work ethic. Preference will be given to candidates with a master’s degree and/or a CPA and experience in higher education; however, candidates from other areas of financial manage­ment will be considered. The new VPFT/CFO will have a record of progressive and effective management experience as well as knowledge of endowment management, debt management, financial accounting, budgeting and contract management.
