Earlham College is searching for a strategic and visionary new president to take office in the Summer of 2024. As an institution grounded in the Quaker principles of mutual respect, integrity, simplicity, peace and community and with a mission to prepare its graduates to improve the world, there has never been a greater need for what Earlham offers. At a time when all colleges and universities are experiencing an increasingly cost-competitive environment, Earlham is implementing well-designed strategies to remain financially sound. Under the leadership of President Anne M. Houtman, who will retire at the end of this academic year, the College has embarked on an ambitious eight-year plan to grow enrollment and net tuition revenue. The plan includes initiatives to improve retention and graduation rates, provide transformative learning opportunities for its students through new majors and the signature Epic Journey program, and build on Earlham's tradition of success in Division III athletics with the addition of new sports. For Good: The Campaign for Earlham College will conclude in June 2024 and is on track to significantly surpass its $85 million goal. This is a time of momentum and growth at Earlham, and the College seeks confident, forward-looking leadership to fulfill its vital mission in the coming years.

Earlham is a Top 100 national liberal arts college founded in 1847 by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and located in Richmond, Indiana. Host to a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, Earlham is known for the teaching excellence of its faculty. Other notable qualities include its Quaker heritage, focus on social justice, international and domestic diversity, and stewardship of the environment. Earlham's graduates have found impressive success, as exemplified by its ranking in the 97th percentile of graduates who go on to receive Ph.D.s. and in the 99th percentile of those who earn Ph.D.s. in the life sciences. In a typical year, Earlham has served slightly under 1,000 students in its four-year undergraduate program. Its Graduate Program in Education offers the Master of Arts in Teaching and Master of Education degrees, and the College offers a 3+1 degree to allow motivated students to earn both an undergraduate degree and an M.A.T. in only four years. Earlham also is home to the Earlham School of Religion-a Quaker seminary-which offers two master's degrees and enrolls about 50 students.

Building on this progress, Earlham seeks a president who can work collaboratively with its faculty, Cabinet, and Board of Trustees to fuel momentum on the Enrollment Growth Plan and deftly navigate the rapidly changing landscape of higher education. The next president must understand the value of a strong liberal arts education and be able to articulate how programs such as the Epic Journey prepare students to thrive in their lives and careers after Earlham. Knowing that enrollment growth and stability will secure a strong and financially sustainable future for Earlham, the next president must have a deep understanding of best practices in these areas and a willingness to embrace innovative approaches to recruitment and retention. The next president must possess in-depth financial knowledge and excel in fiscal and operational leadership and management. Given Earlham's commitment to shared governance and its distinctively collaborative and consultative approach to decision making, the next president must be a person of integrity, resilience and character who can earn the trust and respect of the community. The next president must be an outstanding communicator, relationship-builder and fundraiser. Successful administrative leadership experience in higher education would be valuable. The next president must possess the ability to lead and work effectively with a strong leadership team to build strategy and ensure implementation of shared institutional goals.
