Vice Dean, Medical Education

Vice Dean, Medical Education

University of California, San Diego

The UC San Diego School of Medicine (https://medschool.ucsd.edu/Pages/default.aspx) is committed to academic, scientific, and clinical excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and invites applications for the role of Vice Dean of Medical Education.

The Division of Medical Education pursues a tripartite mission of innovative research, education, and service in a highly diverse environment. The Division and the School of Medicine at UC San Diego are committed to academic, scientific, and clinical excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body.

In 1960, the University of California established UC San Diego as an integral part of the UC system. From the outset, it emphasized educating the next generation of California scientists and engineers, and expanded with the launch of the School of Medicine in 1968. Like its parent university, the school has placed a high standard upon linking basic and clinical discovery with outstanding, advanced methods for delivering compassionate care to patients. At present, UC San Diego boasts national and international accolades for the excellence of its education programs; the School of Medicine consistently ranks among the Top 10 in research funding; and its clinical programs have earned a number of distinguished awards for quality patient care. UC San Diego Health ranks in the top tier of academic hospitals and health systems, and over the past few years has constructed a number of incredible new inpatient and outpatient spaces.

The UC San Diego School of Medicine has more than 1,500 physician and scientist faculty members and more than 500 students, 900 residents and fellows, and hundreds of graduate students. It has 5 top-ranked residency programs and ranks 17th and 22nd on the US News and World Report's Best Medical Schools for Primary Care and for Research, respectively. The School's leadership embraces a culture of academic excellence coupled with innovation and collaboration, and continuously seeks to align its educational programs with cutting-edge research, new clinical technologies and techniques, and hands-on experience through pioneering programs that emphasize compassionate, personalized patient care.

The School of Medicine is part of a dynamic Health Sciences organization that also comprises the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and UC San Diego Health, which includes the Hillcrest Medical Center, Jacobs Medical Center, Moores Cancer Center, Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center, Shiley Eye Institute and many other centers, clinics and affiliates throughout Southern California.

Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Vice Dean will serve as the primary institutional leader for the broad portfolio of medical education programs in the School of Medicine and will directly oversee all aspects of medical education, working collaboratively with other institutional leaders who have primary responsibilities for other educational programs within the school. The Vice Dean will be responsible for the management of direct reports including, but not limited to, institutional leaders with responsibilities for undergraduate medical education (MD degree), graduate medical education (GME), continuing medical education (CME), and the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP). Given the interdisciplinary nature of education at UC San Diego, there will be opportunities to catalyze interactions among these programs and foster a culture of learning across the continuum of biomedical education, including in partnership with the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The incumbent will be responsible for providing leadership, direction, and executive oversight for all matters related to academic portfolio management and evaluation, academic innovation and integration, and compliance and accreditation. The Vice Dean will identify and implement opportunities to evolve and enhance the School's academic offerings to ensure that the School continues to offer diverse and cutting-edge programs, and collaborate with the Dean and other senior leaders to evaluate and enhance the health of the School's academic programs.

UC San Diego seeks candidates whose leadership capabilities and experience, teaching, research, and/or community service have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to excellence. As with similar roles, the Vice Dean is expected to abide by UC San Diego's Standards of Community, including in the areas of recruitment, diversity, service, and other policies and regulations. Ability to represent credibly, reliably, effectively, and tactfully the Dean to campus and external constituencies. Demonstrated ability to foster strong collaborations within a medical school and across a larger University community.
