One of the nation's leading public polytechnic universities, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) seeks a visionary, inclusive, and strategic leader as its next Dean of Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC). Reporting directly to Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, John A. Pelesko, Ph.D., the dean serves as the principal academic and administrative officer of YWCC. Applications, inquiries, and nominations are invited.
One of only 35 polytechnic universities in the United States, New Jersey Institute of Technology is a top-tier research university that catalyzes economic growth and prepares students to become leaders in the technology-dependent economy of the 21st century. NJIT is one of only 131 universities rated an "R1" research university by the Carnegie Classification®, which indicates the highest level of research activity and has a $2.8 billion annual economic impact on the state of New Jersey. NJIT is also the second-highest ranked public university in the Wall Street Journal/College Pulse 2024 list of the Best Colleges in the U.S. Further fortifying NJIT's position as a school with among the highest return on investment, NJIT is ranked the No. 1 public school in New Jersey for net-price value 10 years post-graduation by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, No. 14 "Best College" by Money, top 2% for alumni mid-career earnings by PayScale and No. 33 "Best Value College" by The Princeton Review.
NJIT educates more engineers and computer scientists than any institution of higher education in the tri-state area and was ranked the top university in the nation by Forbes for enabling its lowest-income students to achieve upward economic mobility. In recent years, the university has received accolades from national publications for alumni earning potential, education of underrepresented minorities in STEM, education of veterans, and a variety of top-ranked industry-relevant academic programs. With a clear dedication to access, a demonstrated return on investment for students, and a commitment to local and global impact through world-class research and curriculum, NJIT is a shining example of what public higher education can be.
As the only college dedicated to computing in New Jersey and one of the few standalone colleges of computing in the United States, Ying Wu College of Computing builds on two decades of experience in computing education and research. YWCC has produced more than 12,000 graduates, many of whom have gone on to distinguished careers at Fortune 500 companies and leading academic institutions around the country - and around the world. YWCC's 117 faculty and 25 staff serve over 4,000 students in three departments: Computer Science, Data Science, and Informatics.
The new dean will help to create and advance a renewed, forward-looking vision for Ying Wu College of Computing. This vision will build upon NJIT's forthcoming strategic plan 2030, the college's strengths, and its commitments to student success, impactful research, and innovation. The vision must also include a strategy for a more equitable and inclusive community while recruiting and retaining a diverse and talented faculty, staff, and student body. They will also develop a clearly articulated, comprehensive, and innovative strategy to attract graduate students and sustain their current and rapid undergraduate enrollment growth. The incoming dean will also be a strong partner to NJIT leadership and build relationships across the institution, to promote and expand interdisciplinary education and research. The dean will also develop, lead, and support all corporate, alumni, and donor relations strategies and activities on behalf of the college.
The next dean must have a record of scholarly achievement appropriate for a tenured appointment at the level of full professor in a department within the college. The dean must have a substantial record of administrative leadership and demonstrate the administrative, fiscal, and operational acumen required to manage a complex program in a highly interdisciplinary environment. The dean should demonstrate inspiring leadership qualities and exceptional interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills. The next dean must have the ability to formulate and complete transformative initiatives to improve organizational efficiency, resilience, and revenue. The dean will be a highly engaged and accessible leader and must have a deep and steadfast commitment and track record of advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
