About the Department/College

The Department of Geography, Planning, and Recreation (GPR) offers its students multiple undergraduate and graduate degrees, including a Geography, Environment, and Society Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree as well as undergraduate minors in Urban Planning and Design, Critical Sustainable Studies, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Regional Geography, and Physical Geography. Our geography and planning program offers a Master of Science (M.S.) in Geography, graduate certificates in both Community Planning and GIS, and an accelerated GIS with Remote Sensing online M.S. degree.

GPR, and Northern Arizona University (NAU) more broadly, has a strong commitment to sustainability and justice. About the Position

The Department of Geography, Planning, and Recreation (GPR) at Northern Arizona University (NAU) is inviting applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor of Urban Planning, with a start date of August 2024. GPR is seeking an individual with expertise at the interface between people and the built and natural environments who is excited by the prospect of joining a multidisciplinary faculty and contributing to local and regional environmental planning activities. We are particularly interested in individuals who have pedagogical and practical experience in planning for climate change resilience, environmental sustainability, natural hazards mitigation, and equitable development.

The Assistant Teaching Professor of Urban Planning is a career-track position not eligible for tenure. The anticipation is for this position to be a continuous appointment, with opportunities for promotion and professional advancement contingent on successful performance, department needs and continued funding.

Responsibilities Include:
  • The successful applicant will teach planning courses in our undergraduate and graduate degree programs using various modalities. Potential courses of instruction include Introduction to City Planning, Planning for Sustainable Communities, Communities and Public Planning, along with other courses in the Urban Planning and Design minor and Community Planning graduate certificate programs.
  • Successful applicants will also have an opportunity to design future urban planning courses in their area of expertise and play an immediate leadership role in enhancing the department's commitment to urbanism, sustainability and resilience, and justice focused curriculum.
  • We are especially interested in individuals who can complement university and departmental initiatives to advance diverse perspectives, equity, and inclusion through meaningful engagement with students, faculty, and external stakeholders on environmental and social issues critical to a sustainable and just society.

This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.

9-month, renewable non-tenure track position, starting August 2024.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates must have a Ph.D. in urban planning or a closely related field by the time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with teaching and/or research in areas of climate change resilience, environmental sustainability, natural hazards mitigation, and/or equitable development.
  • Experience with urban/environmental planning curriculum design and assessment.
  • Prior teaching experience and excellent teaching evaluations.
  • Experience teaching across a variety of modalities (e.g., in-person, online, hybrid).
  • Experience with urban/environmental planning practice or engagement with the planning profession including urban, social, and/or environmental problems.
  • Evidence of mentoring students and/or professionals in the urban/environmental planning field.
  • Experience and success in fostering and creating a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive learning and working environment.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of instructional design, effective pedagogy, and innovative learning methodologies.
  • Effective skills in communication, critical thinking, and collaboration.
  • Ability to promote a diverse, inclusive environment amongst faculty, staff, and students.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary range begins at $60,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page . Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service . Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following election. Pre-Employment Check

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment.
