The University of the Arts (UArts) seeks a dynamic, visionary and creative professional to join its leadership team in the role of provost. UArts is one of only a handful of accredited institutions of higher education in the country dedicated solely to the visual and performing arts, design and writing.
The next provost will possess the passion, interest and ability to explore, expand and enhance the unique opportunities presented by the university’s educational model and championed by its location. Serving as the chief academic and creative officer, the provost works to maintain the highest standards of academic and creative excellence, encourage and prioritize innovation, promote research and thought leadership in arts practice, and maximize the benefits of shared governance. The provost partners with the president and senior leadership to provide a framework for exceptional levels of communication, collaboration, innovation, efficiency and effectiveness in the planning, management and delivery of administrative, fiscal and support services across campus.
The next provost of UArts will be inspired by the notion that student success is at the forefront of all decisions at the university and understands that student success is achieved by offering a rich and meaningful array of experiences, challenges, opportunities and support to students in and out of the classroom. The provost leads a faculty of creatively engaged, impassioned and accomplished artists, scholars and teachers who share deep commitments to interdisciplinary, boundary-crossing creativity, as well as focused disciplinary study and intellectual research. The culture of the university is best reflected in faculty and student engagement in creative risk-taking, inventiveness and excellence in skills-based technical achievements.
The successful candidate will have scholarly distinction within an artistic discipline including possession of a terminal degree in a relevant field and a record of education and professional/artistic accomplishments; experience as an educator or a university-level teacher in the arts, humanities or social sciences; and an understanding of the history and traditions in the arts and knowledge of current directions in the arts, media and higher education.
UArts is located in the heart of downtown Philadelphia, named “the coolest city in America” by the Huffington Post and one of “the top 10 coolest U.S. cities” by Forbes magazine. Once described as being conveniently located between New York and D.C., Philadelphia has become a significant center for art and culture in its own right, and plays a leading role in shaping the life and experiences of UArts students.
