THE SEARCH
Luther College, a private undergraduate liberal arts college located in Decorah, Iowa and affiliated with the Lutheran Church-ELCA seeks an accomplished, collaborative, and strategic leader to serve as its next Vice President for Finance and Administration (VPFA). The VPFA will join Luther at a time of great opportunity as the college envisions and enacts strategies to adapt to the rapidly changing higher education landscape and ensure Luther’s financial health and stability long into the future.
Reporting directly to the President, the VPFA is responsible for a broad portfolio which includes financial services, human resources (including Title IX), information technology services, facilities, dining services, campus safety, and the Luther bookshop. The VPFA is Luther’s chief financial officer and oversees an annual operating budget of $72 million. In addition to serving as a key member of the President’s Cabinet, they will also be a member of the Budget Advisory Council, Health Care Council, Land Use Committee, and serve as staff liaison to Board of Regent committees including the Financial Sustainability Committee, Facilities and Sustainability Committee, Audit Committee, and Investment Committee, the last of which stewards the college’s approximately $193 million endowment.
The VPFA will be a strong partner to the President, the Provost, fellow senior leaders, and the Board of Regents, providing strategic leadership for all short- and long-term financial decision-making. They will be a motivating and inspiring change agent, working with senior leadership and financial stakeholders across the college to shape institutional culture around budgeting, identify new revenue streams, and implement sustainable business plans. Overseeing complex operational units, they will advance strategies for campus maintenance and sustainability in line with the recently completed campus master plan and the college’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.
The next VPFA will be a vital member of the Luther College campus community and the town of Decorah. They will possess the communications and interpersonal skills to genuinely connect and collaborate with a wide range of highly dedicated stakeholders. They will bring a deep appreciation of Luther’s academic mission, upholding a culture of integrity, community, engagement, and openness. Given Luther’s commitment to equity, inclusion, and belonging, the next VPFA should possess a track record of fostering these values within a complex institution. Finally, as a leader of a large team, the VPFA will be a manager who both supports and challenges, modeling a culture of high-quality service and transparency, utilizing the expertise of their leadership team, and establishing strategic staffing plans that ensure a strong and competitive workforce.
