Dean of the Faculty
Vassar College invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the Faculty.
Vassar is a highly selective, coeducational liberal arts college of about 2,450 undergraduate students, located in the Hudson Valley, seventy-five miles north of New York City. Vassar stands upon the homelands of the Munsee Lenape and is located in Poughkeepsie, home to a culturally diverse community, and benefits from convenient commuter rail access to New York City. The Vassar curriculum is broader, richer, and more varied than ever, with concentrations ranging from Latin to cognitive science, biochemistry to religion, and astronomy to Africana studies. Vassar, which was among the first colleges to offer classes in drama, psychology, and Russian, has experimented with interdepartmental courses since the early 1900s and has long been recognized for curricular innovation. The unique traditions upon which the College was founded continue to be upheld today: a determination to excel, a willingness to experiment, a dedication to the values of the liberal arts and sciences, a commitment to the advancement of equality between the sexes, and the development of leadership. Vassar continues to stand at the forefront of liberal arts institutions and has positioned itself as a leading force in higher education in the 21st century.
Reporting to the President, the Dean of the Faculty is the College’s chief academic officer, responsible for all aspects of the educational program and for supporting the work of the faculty. The Dean of the Faculty oversees the continuing study of the education offered by the College and initiates changes in curriculum and educational policy as needed. In the execution of these duties, the Dean is responsible to the faculty. The Dean is responsible for contracting, review, and support for approximately 290 full-time and 60 part-time members of the faculty. The Dean oversees the annual budget of approximately $50 million for the faculty, related support staff, and curricular programming, as well as endowed and gift funds supporting the academic program. Ideal candidates will demonstrate a deep passion for and commitment to the liberal arts, will be experienced in intellectual vision-setting, possess the skills and disposition to advocate for the faculty with senior leadership and the board of trustees, and will have outstanding listening, communication, mediation, and problem-solving skills. An earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree and a record of distinguished scholarship and teaching, requisite for an appointment as a tenured full professor, are required.
