The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) invites nominations and applications for an experienced and innovative leader to serve as the Dean of the College of Sciences. The Dean is the chief academic and administrative leader of the College of Sciences which includes Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Statistical Sciences, and Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences. This individual reports directly to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, Student Success, and P-16 Integration and works closely with the Executive Vice President for Research, Graduate Studies, and New Program Development. UTRGV invites candidates with comprehensive academic administrative experience and a record of scholarly achievement.

The University seeks a candidate who will provide academic and administrative leadership to ensure the College’s continued development, operation, expansion and enhancement. The responsibilities of the dean include implementing a clear and concise strategic plan to advance the mission and vision; building an organizational culture of collegial teamwork; fostering an organizational and educational climate that promotes and celebrates diversity; providing leadership in program assessment, external program review, and professional accreditation, and leading the efforts to assess, develop, grow and manage undergraduate and graduate academic programs and curriculum development.

The College of Sciences offers undergraduate degrees in the following disciplines: Bachelor of Science in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics, all available with teacher certification in collaboration with the College of Education and P-16 Integration; Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, Marine Biology, Statistics, and Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems; Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies in Life Sciences and in Middle School Mathematics, both with teacher certification in collaboration with the College of Education and P16 Integration.  It offers Master’s degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Ocean, Coastal and Earth Sciences, and Agricultural, Environmental, and Sustainability Sciences. It also includes the following centers and programs: The Center for Advanced Radio Astronomy (CARA), The Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy, The Center for STEM Education, The Center for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Advancement (SARA), The Center for Vector-Borne Diseases, Agroecology and Resilient Food Systems program, The Spacecraft Tracking and Astronomical Research into Giga-hertz Astrophysical Transient Emission (STARGATE) program, The Center for Urban Ecology, The Mathematics and Science Academy, UTRGV High Scholars Program, and the nation’s largest UTeach program.

Qualified candidates must have a terminal degree; minimum of five (5) years of administrative experience at the chair level or above, or, comparable experience in educational leadership, with responsibility for budgets, personnel decisions, performance reviews and decisions for promotion and tenure; established record of accomplishment in scholarship, teaching, and service that qualifies the candidate for a senior faculty appointment in one of the College’s disciplines; full-time teaching experience at the university level; evidence of past effectiveness in responding to the educational needs of an urban, multicultural population; and demonstrated commitment to the University's core values of integrating scholarly research, teaching, and service to develop students' talents and prepare them for success in a dynamic global society.
