VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS AND  DEAN OF THE COLLEGE

Grinnell, Iowa

Grinnell College (Grinnell), one of the top liberal arts colleges in the nation, seeks a vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college (VPAA) to lead a distinctive academic program. As pioneers of an individually-advised curriculum, Grinnell has long been a leader in teaching and learning, providing students access to rigorous courses of study that allow them to follow their passions with the guidance of dedicated faculty. The next VPAA will continue to develop an innovative academic and co-curricular program that will create well-rounded students, fully prepared for success in an ever-changing world. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a financially sustainable environment, partnered with a dynamic and experienced president and an outstanding faculty and staff to shape Grinnell’s leadership role in liberal arts education.

Grinnell College is a highly selective, private, residential liberal arts college widely recognized for its rigorous curriculum and strong tradition of social engagement. Founded in 1846, Grinnell enrolls approximately 1,650 students generally from all states and about 50 countries in 27 major fields and 12 concentrations. Among the nation’s small liberal arts colleges, Grinnell is widely viewed as an institution of the first rank, with an excellent faculty, a skilled staff, a consistently strong and diverse student body, a well-equipped and beautiful campus, and a strong financial position.

In 2010, Grinnell welcomed Dr. Raynard S. Kington as its 13th president. Dr. Kington is committed to building on the college’s considerable achievements to create a strong institutional future. Under President Kington’s leadership, the college has achieved financial stability and engages in constant reflection, adjustment, and action, re-visiting its strategic plan every year.

The VPAA will continue this momentum, greatly aided by the progress that has come before, and will discover, plan, and execute new initiatives for the benefit of the college. The VPAA will be charged with listening to, collaborating with, and inspiring the faculty and staff around a common set of priorities. The successful candidate will be an outstanding teacher and scholar, with a deep belief in the importance of a liberal arts education in today’s world. The next VPAA must be well informed about new approaches in pedagogy and dedicated to continual improvement of the learning experience at Grinnell. This VPAA must have the ability to oversee a complex set of academic programs and functions, including student affairs, athletics, and curriculum planning and budgeting, and be able to develop, delegate to, and lead teams toward the achievement of goals. The VPAA will work in collaboration with the president, the vice president for finance, and the vice president for planning to develop the college’s budget and will be able to take responsibility for the functioning of the college in the president’s absence.
